What does 'Out of memory mean'?

Options
Hope someone can help as i am totally useless at anything IT.

I've just had a box flash up off the bottom tool bar telling me 'virtual memory too low.
a few mins later a box appeared in the middle of the screen telling me 'Out of memory at line 49'.
Anybody got any idea whats going on....it is running a little slow at the moment as well.
Thanks

    The 'bottom toolbar' of WHAT?

    A PC? A tablet? iMac?

Once we've established what device you're using, what application(s) do you have running on the device?

Thank you Closed, i have taken the first 2 steps by clicking and installing the first 2 links. I think i will have to leave the last step of increasing the speed to my husband when he's home at the weekend..just had a quick read and i'm afraid my head is fuddled with morphine and it all read as gobblygook i would actually most probably need a new laptop if i attempted it.
Anyway thankyou your help is really appreciated.

Those 2 steps are unlikely to make it quicker, did you actual run them?

    the crucial questions are

what operating system are you using

what were you doing at the time
how much free disk space is there

what is the commit charge and peak commit
    how much ram is installed

the last 2 can be found out by using task manager, and clicking on the performance tab

Yes i ran both of them..something has happened because it is running slightly better...it has be awful the last few days, taking ages to download everything. Just tried ebay selling babe and it downloaded near enough instantly, a lot quicker than it has been doing.

    the crucial questions are

what operating system are you using

    Sorry no idea...i really am i dumb user..give us a clue!:o

what were you doing at the time- When?
how much free disk space is there- Wiztree said i have 53. something left

hat is the commit charge and peak commit -
how much ram is installed - Oh god i should know something as simple as that...where can that be found?

the last 2 can be found out by using task manager, and clicking on the performance tab

Oh just seen the above will just try and find the performance tab...
    Thanks for your patience.
