Charges

I could not find a section on bank charges so have added it here. In the early [art of the millennium I sought to claim back some unfair charges on my bank account. I used an outside company and all looked positive...until the whole thing was quashed. I simply gave up. But recently I have seen that you can still appeal unfair bank charges which I wish to do, but mine go back more than the six years.

I would like to contact the bank involved and request these charges repaid but I don't know whether I have the same rights as people within the 6 year bracket? Any help appreciated
Regards,
Ds

You have the right to send in a complaint about current charges..

You can request charges are refunded if you are in financial hardship at the moment but a bank will not look at historical charges.

I don't know what you mean by the "6 year bracket" ? Banks aren't obliged to refund anything unless the charge was down to their error.
  • Many of my charges were what I would class as unfair (£35 charge for going over by a few £'s, etc). In Martin's section about claiming back unfair bank charges he talks about claiming back charges within the last 6 years. My unfair charges were further back than this (within about the last 10 years). At the time of the charges I was struggling and did 'snowball', receiving charges on top of charges.

Whilst my financial status is stable at present, I still feel that I should protest the charges I was subjected too. I hold my hands up that I received charges due to messy finances, but I feel the charges were ridiculous in comparison

The banks won the court case against "unfair" charges in 2009.

You can still complain but i wouldn't hold your breath.

Your complaint may have been successful if you'd complained at the time.
  • I could not find a section on bank charges ...

There's a board dedicated to reclaiming them (and credit card charges) here:

    :)
  • I did complain in 2006 just after my charges, unfortunately I went with an outside company. 3 years after I received a letter stating the court case you mentioned, and thus missed my window.

I guess it's probably more hassle than it's worth now

Martins article on reclaiming such bank charges says:

This guide hasn't been updated since 2010. Very few have tried this system and we've not had any successes.
