Since you've already organised your mother-in-law's photos on to a USB drive, it would not be a huge job to create a second set at a lower resolution. Use something like Irfanview or Faststone to make a set with the resolution at 1280px on the longest side and 70% compression. Depending on the camera and the size of the images it makes, these reduced files should be approx 1/10th the size of the originals, so they will take 1/10th as long to upload or download from cloud storage and use 1/10th as much of your data allowance (if that's an issue).

Obviously, you, or your mother-in-law must keep the original files on the USB as master copies. For everyday viewing on a tablet, the reduced set will be indistinguishable from the originals. Given that they're only 1/10th the size of the originals, they would also fit happily on to a 16GB tablet, without needing a micro SD card, should you prefer to go that route.

    What about a Cube U30GT2 ?.
You can buy these direct from the maker for around £150 including shipping.

As for 'she will be better off with an iPad', having used both an iPad & an Android tablet I can safely say they both behave the same. They both use icons and they both use the same hand gestures to do the same thing.

The main difference between the 2 is that whilst Android runs a slimmed-down version of Linux with a touch screen interface & a JAVA-like bitcode system in which all the apps run, the latest 4th gen. iPad runs a full version of Mac OSX 10.8.
    Never Knowingly Understood.

  • You says she needs the ability to access the internet but you didnt say from where? If its from home and she has wifi then the current suggestions are good, if she wants to access the internet when out and about she needs a tablet with 3G built in and she needs a PAYG 3G SIM, tablets with 3G are more expensive.
  • Further to the recommendation of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3...

Samsung are due to release their latest generation of Galaxy tablets any day now, so it might be worth holding on for a couple of weeks until they appear in the shops. There is likely to be a drop in price of the Tab 3 once these are released.

I don't know whether I'm too late with this, but the bargain of the moment is the Samsung Tab3 8". I'm typing on it at the moment having bought it from Tesco just before Christmas, for £149.99.

I believe it's currently available from Sainsburys for the same price, and I saw a suggestion that John Lewis might price match.

Is this the same item here? http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/1098712.htm?CMPID=GS001&_$ja=cgid:8710417142|tsid:41408|cid:177976142|lid:55246670222|nw:g|crid:31126304822|rnd:1157463512209105772|dvc:c|adp:1o1
  • Thanks all for your replies. My mother-in-law has now gone and purchased a LAPTOP though! Still, all is not lost. I'd wanted & needed to know & understand more about the tablet arena & your advice has certainly made me a bit more wiser. Thanks! :-)

  • No, that's the 7" version. And there's more than just an inch difference between them, the 8" is a better spec besides having a bigger screen.
