Hi..
Forgive my technical ignorance. I'm hoping for a bit of advice. My mother-in-law wants to move away from her broken old laptop and get a tablet. She has a budget of approx £250.00 and she's asked me for my help
All she needs really is ability to access the internet, and she needs somewhere to hoard her stash of photo's that she has (approx 5,000 on her laptop which I have saved on to a USB).
If she were to get something like a Nexus 10 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nexus_10 would this have the ability to store her images for her?
Thanks
Charlie

Flickr. Storing the photographs on the tablet itself would be extremely unwise.0 -
I'd agree about using an online photo storage solution for 5,000 photos. They will take up a considerable amount of space on the tablet otherwise, and if the device fails, you have the hassle of having to save them back across (assuming they're still backed up somewhere else).
With regards to a tablet. The preferred choice for most is the iPad due to its simplicity of use (and excellent quality). Obviously the Nexus etc are all capable alternatives, but consider whether your Mother-in-Law has used Android before and, if not, perhaps get her to have a look at it first before committing. I know countless acquaintances who have bought an Android device and been overwhelmed with its operating system.
Would she be happy with a 7" or does she need something bigger?0 -

She doesnt need to spend anything like that for her minimum requirements. She could get a new blackberry playbook for less than £100. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B00CSSH2DK/ref=dp_olp_all_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=all
The 64gb would provide her ample room for her pictures and quick access to them.
Of course storing online as well is a wise precaution.
She could also take good quality pictures, listen to radio, BBC Iplayer etc and it would give her an opportunity to see how she gets on with a Tablet. I know it's old technology but it was a quality item in the first place. I keep looking at deals on other tablets but cannot find anything worth paying for that I cannot do already on my playbook.I'm Glad to be here... At my age I'm glad to be anywhere!!
I'm not losing my hair... I'm getting more head!!0 -
The problem with buying end of life hardware for older users is that they invest the effort into learning to use it, and then when it comes to the end of its natural life are annoyed to find that they can't find anything which works the same. And, of course, a Playbook has the problem that the answer to
anyone telling her about a new app they're using is "sorry, I can't use that". It's a dead-end solution.0 -
Have you looked at the ipad mini on the ebay tesco outlet? It is £209 with a year's warranty. It is not the latest generation but should be speedy enough for most tasks. Also easy to use and slightly bigger than 7 inches so nicer on the eyes when browsing for example.
Alternatively there's the nexus 7 which is £199 for the base model and works great but may be a little bit complicated?0 -
Thanks for your comments so far guys
As she's in her mid-late 70's I'm a little concerned that a 7" screen would be too taxing on her eyes, therefore a 10" screen or larger would be better me thinks.
Is there an easy/fast way for me to store 5,000 images online?0 -

Not really. The important thing is the total size of them. Consider a free account with google drive, which gives you 15Gb of space. The initial upload will take an age, and is probably best done overnight on a connection with unlimited bandwidth.
Your upload speed is going to be a fraction of your download. Use something like speedtest.net to get an idea what it will be, then leave it to get on with it. Just make sure the uploading computer isn't set to sleep after something like an hour. It's annoying when you check it the morning after and find it only did an hour's worth of uploading!I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. Some good advice above.
I would take her to John Lewis and have a play together with a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 tablet. £249 in White with 2 years warranty. Big bright sharp display, plenty of features and long battery life.

Forget Apple stuff, its too pricey to get what you need.0
