Actually it may depend on the deal being offered by the finance company.

I work for a dealership and I asked one of the managers why we were settling so many finance deals soon after they were taken out.

He told me that the finance company was offering the customer a bigger discount if they took out finance so what alot of customers were doing was buying a car on finance then giving us the money from their bank accounts to settle the finance for them.

Also it could be at 0% .....as I said it depends on the deal

Many years ago our family car died. We were absolutely skint my OH needed a car to get to work.

We bought a Renault 5 on 0% over 4 years, our dead car (it had to be towed to the garage) as deposit.

We had the Renault for 17 years, no repairs required, just new tyres and brake pads as needed, one new set of windscreen wiper blades. It sailed through it's MOT every time. Gave the car to my sister in the end…..

OK we may have paid a little extra to start with but it turned out to be one heck of a deal.

Not all finance deals are bad, not all new cars are money down the drain …...

When I bought my last computer a friend shook her head at me. She thinks it was several hundred pounds down the drain "playing", as she calls it with a gadget. She despises computers.

Considering the amount of money my computers have saved me over the last few years, they have more than paid for themselves :)!
    . . .I did not speak out

    Then they came for me
And there was no one left
    To speak out for me..

If they want advice then offer it, otherwise it's best to stay out of it. Sometimes you have to let people make their own mistakes.

One piece of advice is: Only dredge up old threads if you have something useful to offer.

I long ago decided that there is no end to the folly of humankind. I therefore don't get frustrated, not even surprised, by anything I see or hear of. 'A fool and his money are soon parted' is a very old and true saying.

Exactly! I have advised friends who are not rolling in dosh that a Halifax account which would give them £60 because they can easily fulfil the criteria would be an added bonus... only to be told "I can't be bothered!"
    Ah well....
and the £100 to transfer... I had forgotten that!

I used to get frustrated at people throwing money down the drain OP, now it exhausts me to worry about everyone else's affairs. I often mention the benefits on MSE but if they 'don't get it' just get on and live my OS life. Pleased to say, though, that my habits have rubbed off on both my adult children and they're also members of these forums :)

Yep! been there and bought the ticket to watch.

Other peoples lives are their own. We can give out good advice and they have to decide to act on it or not.

I am sure we have all had plenty of struggles and falls. We have got older and wiser. Continuing to learn and read on MSE.

I sometimes wish I could earn a bit extra cash by helping strangers with household accounts and my penny pinching living.
Penny pinching = not spending with out thinking if we need, have something else we can use instead/recycling,
    Reducing bills.
The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)

Where I live I can get a 4 pint carton of milk from Asda for £1. The other day I could not be bothered going to Asda so went to Marks and Spencer, which is nearer. They charged me £1.49 for the same carton of milk.
A lot of it is "relative". We have to be careful about being judgemental.

I agree about not being judgemental. A lot of people buy M&S milk because they only buy milk from UK and Irish farmers, who they pay a guaranteed fair price. Those who want to support UK farmers don't go to Asda to buy milk because Asda (and others such as Tesco) frequently cuts the price they pay to UK farmers, and now TWO UK dairy farms per day go out of business as a result.

Personally, I don't consider paying more for milk in order to support our dairy farmers to be money down the drain.

Great if you can afford to ,but many people who look on this site can't,and look to save as much as they can. I would love to shop solely from M & S but if I did then I would soon be broke. I cut my coat according to my means ,a very old fashioned saying but very true. Without my help to my family , especially my youngest DD who works like her OH full time they struggle with four growing lads to feed and clothe things would be very different for them I don't mind as I know they appreciate it. Thats what being a family is about, helping each other when times are tough.I try to make each pound do the job of two and by being as frugal and sensible with cash I manage a fortnights holiday every year for her and family at the seaside. I have a very well-worked out budget for food and set my weekly menu from my store cupboards every Sunday.Spending more than I need to on food is not an option
