Do I need a powerflush central heating?

Hello MSE
I am in the market for a new boiler. I have had a quote and one of the optionals on the list is a powerflush. Do I need one? It's not cheap. The boiler we have has been serviced every year but is now 20 years old. Our rads are hot all over. We are having a new hot water cylinder put in as well - no idea if this would affect a powerflush but I am interested to know why it's been offered? Thanks all.

Some manufacturers apparently insist on a powerflush for their guarantee to be valid.
The problem is that often rip-off prices are charged.

Almost all require a chemical flush as a warranty term-not necessarily a powerflush.
Is the one giving you this option BG by any chance? They are notorious for promoting (overpriced) powerflushes as the solution to almost any CH issue. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Hi, thanks for the replies. Included in the quote is:
Central heating cold flush & corrosion inhibitor.
I can't see anything else relating to flush apart from this at the end:
Full central heating system powerflush if required.
It's not British Gas, I wouldn't use them. The British Gas salesman did come to quote - surly attitude in a BMW 3 series no less.
Many thanks0 -
It shouldn't be optional, you either need a powerflush or you don't. That is why you get quoted.0

Thanks, how do I know if I need a powerflush or not? This is something I can't really afford on top of a new boiler which is why I am asking the question please. Is this something they won't know until they start installing a new boiler? Thanks.0

Best bet is to get an engineer round to check your water quality, there's no way of knowing otherwise.0

What is wrong with him turning up in a BMW 3 Series? Would you have been happier if he came by bus or on a bicycle?0
