Space heater for workshop?

Options
Can anyone recommend a suitable space heater?

The area is my workshop which is around the same size of a double garage, maybe slightly bigger. It has no insulation and is just breezeblock walls.

I had a little 1600w halogen heater last year but it only seemed to warm to a certain distance.

Thanks all!

Or something similar? - The one I have used was very good, smaller than that I think. Also need a tank of gas with it.

Yes, it's something like that I'm after although I don't like the sound of using gas with it as it is not a very well ventilated area.... Does 'LPG Fan Heater' mean it can use electric OR gas - or does it mean it uses gas as the fuel and an electric fan to push the hot air around?

Is Stanley a good make for this sort of thing? (I always think of them as making tape measures and hammers!)

What do you do in your workshop?

Space heaters working on gas will put moisture into the air. As you workshop is un insulated you may have problems with condensation.
  • Sorry, pass for if stanley / draper / sealy brand is best, not enough experience to comment.

They are gas only, they just use electric to blow air, and a gas flame to heat. The sides of the heater stay cold, so you can lean against by mistake and not get burnt.

Yes, moisture will be an issue. I have helped install kinsgpan sheets as a ceiling and wall liner in another workshop, and the results were brilliant. No need to worry about what it looked like as it was just a workshop and had storage covering all the walls anyway!

That sounds about the same size as my dad's workshop (his is precast concrete). He uses a wood burner made out of an old gas bottle and it works well.

My workshop's quite a bit larger, but insulated. I tend to use a space heater to bring the temperature up, and another gas bottle wood burner to my bit warm.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

What don't I do in my workshop! ha ha

Fixing things the missus breaks (like the vacuum cleaner), I do a bit of wood work out there and about a quarter of the space is used for storage of everything from bicycles to camping equipment.

I am wondering if I can also have a home brewery out there but I have no idea how temperature (hot or cold) or moisture would affect such a venture.

How much did that cost to buy? Was it easy to use / install yourself?

Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

Thanks Raksha, I think that would have the same problem as my 1600w halogen heater last year; I can only feel the heat if I'm close to it - although the overheat cut-out does sound like a good idea!

I wouldn't use an LPG heater in a workshop. All your tools will go rusty.

They generate a huge amount of water when burning.
