Vanquis - Positive balance? - Car hire

in Credit cards
Hello,
I have recently got a vanquis credit card as I had no credit rating before, so saw it as a good opportunity to build credit.
I am going to Florida in the summer, and for the car hire, they require me to swipe my card through and they take $400 which is refunded at the end of the holiday once the car is returned. This is equal to around £250 + the fees for foreign currency. However, my credit limit is only £250 so that would take it over - having a bad effect on my credit rating.
Could I put some money from my debit card onto my credit card so that I don't go over my credit limit? I'm not sure what else I could do otherwise, I don't want this to ruin my holiday! I rang up the car hire company who said only Credit cards are acceptable!
Thanks.

It's against the terms to load a credit balance. You may get away with it, but you may not, and you risk having the card blocked while you're away.
Are you sure they actually take the money and refund it? I would think it's more likely that it's just earmarked. Whether that will still allow them to earmark the full amount, I don't know.
Perhaps consider getting a second card?0 -

Thanks for the reply. The problem is, I have no credit rating, so I'm not sure what cards would accept me that would have 300+ credit limit too.0 -
You may be able to split it over two though. Aqua may be worth a shot.0

I'll post on here, rather than on your other thread, but why Vanquis? Is it because your own bank declined you? Generally your bank (the one that receives your income and pays your bills) are the best placed to offer decent limits because they know more about your financial circumstances than anyone else.0
