50" Toshiba TV

Just returned from Currys - they have a 50 " Toshiba tv for circa £500 - anyone know if this would be a good bye or can anyone recommend a similar size for a similar amount ??

Comments

  • I bought a Toshiba 50" Smart TV from Curry's last year and took it back the following day.

Far from being smart, it was extremely dumb. The available Apps were appalling, but the worst thing about the TV was every time you wanted to change a setting, it came up "Are you sure, press Yes or No" to proceed.

A completely annoying box of junk as far as I was concerned.
"There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock
  • £500 is cheap for a 50" SMART TV and, as such, you can expect the manufacturer to have cut corners to achieve this price. This is a cheap TV and, therefore, not a bargain.

Yes, it would be goodbye to your money...:)

My advice is to find the model number from the Currys site and seek out expert reviews of it on the web, plus a specialist forum like AVForums, before proceeding.

This one - which may be the one you've seen is 'not the best quality' but 'good screen size for money' when reviewed at a higher price in Sep 2013...

If it is this model, we purchased one at Christmas and are very pleased with it - The display is excellent quality. Blacks are black and colours are very good.

    Would certainly recommend it.

The only issue comes to when the model number is unique to that particular store and finding relevant reviews can be tricky as the manufacture might have replaced some parts to make it cheaper.

This is what a lot of supermarkets (and large electrical outlets) do. They have "exclusive" versions of TVs from reputable manufacturers which look to all intents and purposes like far more expensive models, but cut corners on cost by using cheaper (and likely inferior) parts.

Do not be deceived by reviews unless the TV's model number is the exact same as the version purchased.

As I said earlier, £500 for a 50" SMART TV sounds too good to be true (and so probably is!)
