  • Oh dear me! But hey thanks for the advice!! The fact that I own a business (and employ staff) that is fully authorised and regulated by the FCA should maybe give you a clue to my credit history! But hey thanks...."I'll work on it"!!

It tells me nothing, really...especially not about your credit history.

Firstly....don't assume I'm a "he"! How very small minded in 2014!

And secondly, I have been in business many years and 100% of my business comes from repeat clients and their recommendations. Oh and having never received one complaint....not even from an ambulance chaser.....in over 14 years, I'm inclined to think I don't do such a bad job.

But hey...go ahead judge if you like....and you obviously like!

  • So in conclusion...if we can all generally quit with the useless, presumptive and ill-informed comments, I just wanted to make a point with this post that it doesn't matter who you are, what you earn or how good your credit rating is, there are no guarantees when it comes to applying for credit with the cherry-picking banks!

The second point being about the lack of communication from Santander who didn't even acknowledge receipt of the online application, not even by email, to the point where I wondered whether it had even gone through or not and no phone line to ring when you've applied on line.

But thanks for all the advice but if you can take the post in the way it was meant, it may help other people or at least add another perspective to their thoughts.

For those who want to carry on casting aspersions and judging me as a person then feel free to carry on and entertain yourselves! I'm going to carry on doing what I do well and earning a good and honest living.

Just make sure you don't apply for any credit...

Although I didn't get declined, Santander were equally uncommunicative with me and when the letter finally arrived they ended up giving a credit limit vastly less than I am used to getting. It won't be a very slow stooze filling this one up - ah well, you win some ...

I seem to have read in the papers that Santander has poor customer service and poor systems

I believe the kids might tell you to "chill". FCA is not really relevant, over a decade ago when I was in an IMRO (suspect you remember them) regulated position, my credit history was notably worse than it is now, from most unbiased standpoints.

All it proves really is that you're not bankrupt/in an IVA/making arrangements to pay. Plenty could be overextended still (note I don't mean you necessarily, simply that it isn't an anathema to any question on an individual's history)

And failing that, regardless of history, they probably do pick and choose based on profit motive. I don't think this is unexpected, as they are businesses. That said, I understand they do fairly well out of merchant fees on credit cards even without interest ever being incurred (might explain why they put up with my 0-interest turnover)

Things have changed a lot now certainly and especially as I'm an AR of a Network who in addition do their own checks but yes I know it didn't used to be as stringent as it is now in many ways.

Good point on the merchant fees though! You see that was the kind of healthy debate I was hoping for! Thank you! :-)
