All keys on completion day

Morning All,

I am due to complete on my first home soon.

I know the door key is generally left with EA on day of completion, but what happens with other keys for the windows, shed, back garden gate etc, are they also left with EA or just inside the house?

Thank you.

Try to agree in advance - ideally with a local EA or solicitor, but if you & vendor are ok with "under the black bucket the the back yard" (insurance minefield), or "see you there" (potentially emotional), whatever will work for you both with least harm &/or fuss!

As an encore, you may want to change the locks anyway for insurance premium management &/or peace of mind.

All the best in your new home!

Except for the front door key, all the other keys have always been left in the house.

Unless your the person i bought my house off... he kept 2 keys and kept letting himself in! I came once and he was on the toilet!!!

Solicitors sorted that one as he believed he still owned it?!?!

But yea front door key is usually with EA, rest of the keys usually on the kitchen side or something.

do you defo need a locksmith? if you are just changing the front./back door locks you can buy a euro cylinder from b&q for between 10-50 quid and change it yourself in 5 minutes. Instructions on packet, videos on youtube!

ps. I left all the keys on the floor in the lounge when i sold...

He still thought he owned the place. I asked him for my money back then he then started saying im still the onwer until such and such a form gets completed.

In the end i told my solicitors to tell his solicitors to tell him that if he breaks in again and does not return the keys ALL of them i would be reporting him to the police.

Nobody was living here as the place was being gutted, i didnt want him to see his dads house being gutted more than anything. He was actually an ok person and i know he would not have caused any damage he just used to come and knock on for post and if nobody answered he let himself in. In his eyes it was ok as he was doing no harm (he was about 65-70).

I have not needed to get the locks changed and everything was ok once his solicitors told him he was not allowed in.

Thanks, i'm not sure yet. They have one of those higher security 5 lever locks, so i don't know if i can just change the front part where you insert the key.

When I sold my flat, I left the window keys in the locks as were replaced at different times - so different locks/keys to each one.

The other keys to the outhouse, garage and spare front door key were left on the fireplace in a small tub.

When my parents moved in, all the spare keys were kept on stick on hooks inside the boiler cupboard door.

Oh my, if that wasn't scary/creepy I would find that funny.
So glad that one of the first things I did was change all the locks in my new house. A 3 minute youtube video and £20 per lock.

What on earth for? Why not leave them on a worktop in the kitchen, somewhere where the new owners don't have to rummage on the floor for them?
