because they have to calculate the tax, fill in the paperwork for HRMC, collect & fprward the money to HRMC, open & reseal the package. All of which takes time & thus money

If all you people who moan about RM don't like the service, vote with your feet and take your business elsewhere!

Oh wait, thats right, no where else can offer the service for anywhere near the same price as RM!! RM offer an excellent value for money service, it's not perfect but then none of the others are either!!

As for underpaid items, you don't have to go and collect them, you can add stamps to the card and have it delivered, or do as I have done, call the number on the card, ask them to tell you who sent the item or what it looks like and either pay up if you want it or return it to sender like I did with a load of DWP paperwork.

Missorts have been reported many times, still get them, the average person doesn't realise, income tax, pensions, hospitals etc. are nothing to do with the council. Including sorters.

I would refuse all underpaid job applications too if it was my call.

We regularly get missorts for the Civic Centre in Wythenshawe - we are in Motherwell! We have had Civic Centre Lerwick in the Shetlands and Waitakere Civic Centre New Zealand. Usualy it's East Kilbride Civic Centre on the other side of the Clyde valley though.

Another classic is local mail for small villages being returned to us as insuficient postage - for international mail - worse than useless to be honest.

cant speak on the missorts im afraid but our office does council offices, goverment(about 15 sub branches in one building there) and many more with good sorting standards.however we have set workers to resort these items into specific sections so its double checked in a way.
your local office however may have the same problem we have.more and more part timers being employed meaning less people sorting mail(they come in later) so more mail & pressure on those sorting

i dont get what you mean by local & international mail?

My letter was underpaid by 47p. It had a big yellow sticker saying so, but it was still posted. Same happened to a family member with £1 too short. Still it was posted. Probably works at the discretion of the postie!!

Not at the discretion of the postie, but someone in the sorting office. This happened to me, and as a result the key to my holiday apartment was delayed until the day before we left. I alerted our postie, who kept a look-out for it and asked me a few days later if it had arrived. So it was nothing to do with him.

If you order an item from overseas, you now have to pay a customs charge, plus the Royal Mail Handling charge of £8

Ended up having to pay an extra £13 for my wife's birthday present which only cost £30 in the first place
in recent years it's been standard practice to charge duty/VAT/handling on items from overseas costing more than £18
sometimes you get lucky & more expensive items get through without being 'caught'

if ordering from abroad, you should always factor in the possible extra charge & if you don't get caught out, consider it a bonus ;)
