I am looking to buy a new 40-42" TV My son has told me that I should look for an extended warrenty like I have on my Sony which came with a Sony 5 year guarantee.
I went into my local Panasonic TV retailer on Thursday and the TV I am possibly interested was £589 or one at £499 but they had a Manufacturers guarantee of 5 years.
I had been looking at Samsung but this is a 1 year guarantee and have read that Samsung had some problems with sound issues some time ago. Don't know if that still exists or not.
When I read the best buys from Which they have Samsung higher than Panasonic. The Panasonic is 42 " which is going to be neat with my existing corner unit but it would just be about 1" each side. I am putting the 32" Sony into my bedroom. These are smart TV's which I am not sure I need but it seems to be the way to go. Would you buy something with a 5 year warrenty for peace of mind. I don;t want to buy an extended guarantee from a retailer.
Advice would be appreciated

Yeah John Lewis are excellent for warranties.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no. 0650

I was told that the John Lewis guarantee was not the same as a Manufacturers guarantee and that if the TV becomes older and not suitable to repair they will only pay out a smaller amount in relation to how old the TV is Not sure it this information is correct or not

What's the small print?
We're covering the product to remain in working order for the life of that guarantee – in other words against manufacturing defect causing breakdown. If the product's used in the prescribed way and it breaks down, our duty is to get the appliance back to working order – and if we can't do that, we'll replace it with the same model, or discuss an alternative with you if that's no longer available

I've never found John Lewis that helpful when it comes to their warranties, obviously others have but I am not a fan. Richer Sounds refund the cover if you don't claim. My Mind wanders, if found please return.0

I had never heard of RS but have had a look at their web site Some of the TV's say free 5 year guarantee Panasonic Sony and Samsung The Panasonic I saw at the local Panasonic dealer in Harrogate has the same TV £10 less
I did see the ad that the guarantee is 10% of the price which is a very good price for a 5 year extended guarantee.
I liked the look of the Samsung the 40" but the Panasonic has got a stainless strip round it rather than black so is also pleasing to the eye. I suppose it is down to which might be more realiable I read a lot about sound quality but that might not be such an issue for me as I really just want to watch everyday TV. Any thoughts on Brands I have always had Sony everything TV Stereo Blue Ray player Video recorder digital camera but with a zeiss lens. It is hard to step away from a brand that is familar to you. The TXL42ET60B is £589 or £599 I understand that Panasonic Shops are privately owned and the one here has been here for the 15 years I have lived here The Sony shop locally went into receivership about a year ago is gone.
If I could get a 5 year guarantee on the Samsung I might well buy it as it looks good but as a woman I would not really be all that well informed other than looking at the reviews on Which They often leave me more confused than ever.
Again I am very grateful for the advice and information here on this forum.

I would also suggest having a look at your local Costco.
All TVs come with a 5 year guarantee and their pricing is very good. I know you have to pay to join but you still save more than the membership fee.0 -
Have had a look at Cosco they have a very limited no of TV's and after the carry on with a printer I really want to know that I buy from a source that should I have a problem they can be relied upon
