leaving my bank

hello,

the halifax has wrote to me to state they are taking my 980 overdraft away from me on the 10th of this month, i know they can do this but i just dont have 980 quid lying about otherwise i would not need an overdraft if i did. they said worse case is it goes to collections, the agent i spoke to could not understand as he said my credit is good with them, but could be just a case of calling them on the day the overdraft is removed and agreeing a new limit with the lending team. i have already opened an account with another bank as a back up, also i am canceling my direct debits with the halifax only have the two. So if it does come to me leaving the halifax and it goes to collections do they put a freeze on overdraft charges if i am leaving them and i am on a payment plan to clear the overdraft i owe. i know it will mess up my credit rating but i may have no choice as the bank are placing me in that position i am just trying to keep all options open to me. to make matters worse my wife has just given birth to twins talk about bad timing lol yer could not make it up. any ideas most welcome, and to think the loyds group had an issue with peeps being able to withdraw money and make transactions the other day, makes yer think is something more going on behind the scenes ?????:lipsrseal

If your "credit is good" why can't you convert the amount to a personal loan? Have you asked them if this is an option?
  • yes i did but will end up paying more in interest, i know my credit is good as took out a barcleys 0 percent credit card couple days later. to me halifax are just trying to claw back their losses. and i dont need this hassle right now which makes me think i dont want to be with them anymore:mad:

You need to take the emotion out of it.

    Your options are:

[1] Pay a little more interest (on a loan) and protect your credit history/file, or

[2] Allow the account to go to collections and trash your credit file for up to 6 years.

You seem to want to do [2]. Why?

With hindsight you applied for the wrong card. Had you applied for an MBNA card you could have got 0% for 29 months on cash into your current account (for a 4% fee), thus settling the overdraft and buying you a lot of time to sort yourselves out.
  • do you have a link for the correct type of card?, what i cant understand is if i have good credit why may they be taking the overdraft off me, proves my idea clawing back losses, tx for the honest feedback yorkshire boy

Google "mbna 29 months interest free".

They're not happy with your account conduct.

Has the overdraft been reducing or remained (more or less) static over the last 6-12 months?

Is the account returned to credit when you receive your income?

How much is it costing you?...ie how many days at £1/day?

Do you ever exceed the limit?

Must be one of the above, since they gave me a £5K facility and I've never used it.

    No it doesn't!

I know that (see above). :)

How many days a month are you in your overdraft?

Is that cheaper than a loan?

You mentioned you recently took out a Barclaycard. Do you have the option of transferring cash from it to a bank account on the 0% deal?

IIRC, when I got mine I was offered 18 months interest free on balance transfers and transfers to a bank account.

This is what I'm trying to get at (without success despite asking twice).

If it's £30 a month (ie they're never out of it), then it's highly likely that a loan would be cheaper...because £360 per annum on £980 is sub-prime credit card APR territory!

You guys just don't get it, the OP is just a victim of the evil banks, it's nothing to do with their past conduct or money management - oh hang on, it might be?
