Not impressed

I didn't realise there was a legal obligation to refund postage. Last year I had to send back a whole load of unsuitable stuff, which cost me a good £8 in postage.

not strictly true, unless it is made clear in the seller's terms and conditions. It depends on whether this is in the terms of sale or not.

From the DSR:

The original cost of the outbound postage to you should always be refunded by the seller. The seller's terms and conditions or returns policy should state who pays the cost of returning the item.

So have a look at the Ts&Cs of the contract you had with them to see if they state that return postage must be paid by the purchaser.

found in the Sportsdirect terms:

You may cancel your order any time within seven (7) working days, beginning on the day after you received the goods. We will refund the price of the goods in full and will reimburse you for the delivery costs you paid except where multiple items have been ordered and not all of them are being returned. However you will be responsible for the cost of returning the goods to us. If a refund is payable to you we will process the refund as soon as possible, and, in any case within thirty (30) days of the day you give written notice of cancellation.

So with this retailer it clearly states you have to pay return postage under DSR regs so they are within the rules to make you pay.

No seller or on a very rare occasion will refund postage, be it return postage or original postage. I do lots of online shopping - Sports Direct, 24 Studio even QVC don't refund it. It's not a legal obligation, and you agree to those terms when you agree to buy the items.

As for refunds in store from online purchases. As I stated before on here I have had refunds from online orders in store a few times. But not in the last year or more, so this has obviously changed since then. But there's no reason why I would lie about it.

I'm talking about the postage I paid them to send it to me, they are obliged to refund that. I know about the cost to send it back to them.

No they're not obligated to refund the postage. Again, there are very few businesses these days that offer that. Why should they refund the postage?? You had to pay for it being delivered, which in turn was passed onto the RM or whoever sent your order out to you. They don't do that for free, They and the store completed their side of the contract by getting the items delivered to you, it's not their fault it had to be returned. The items didn't get to you by free magic, and again you agreed to the postage charges at the time of ordering.

So they should refund the £4.99 cost I paid to them for delivery to me.

Under the DSR the seller MUST refund the postage paid when they sent the items to you. However, they can make you responsible for the cost of returning them. A lot of internet sellers dont refund automatically as they think the public is too stupid to understand the regulations. I have successfully had postage reimbursed on a number of occassions when I have sent an email to the company pointing out their legal obligations.

As long as you are returning the goods under the DSR, it IS a legal obligation. The reason they dont is they think you wont argue about it.

No, they do refund on online purchases, and promptly too.
