  • My OH used to be a huge meat eater until I started meal planning with the help of a few threads on here for ideas :) We now have 3 meat free days and he's found a passion for veg dishes. What a difference meat free days make to the budget! Both DD and OH have learned there is no place for fussiness in this house. I do the meal planner incorporating some things each of us like so it's about comprimise. I also shop monthly and only shop for fresh fruit and veg that we need and will use weekly. Long gone are the days of "oh I fancy that" when we don't need it. Our diets are healthier, meal times are stress free not cooking different meals and the bank balance is looking good :T:T:T

    Hi all,

I know there are a few threads of a similar title on here, but nothing seems particularly recent with some going back as 2004. With the ever increasing price of food (and with some of the old lists quoting prices half of the product cost of today/unavailable today) I thought it might be time to reignite the challenge!

  • When I was a child at boarding-school the powers-that-be thought that one cold pilchard in tomato sauce and a couple of tinned tomatoes was an adequate evening meal for growing children. Thank goodness for bread and jam.

Cheap? Sausage casserole. Vegetable chilli and rice. Home-made soup. Or most other veggie choices.

You can't beat CFR - well, I can't, anyway! They updated the price list recently.

Soup/stew/curry/chili with bread/rice/potatoes is very cheap. Or mujadara :)
  • Thank you for the link to CFR rinabean, is nice to see the dairy free category, I will have a good read! Always looking for more cheap recipes.

You may be thinking of weezl's threads https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/1157641

I think she now runs a whole web-site on cheap family meals.

    Hi :)

I have searched and read various threads with cheap recipes (seem to be from years ago now though).

I was wondering what is your favourite, cheapest recipe that you do when your cupboards are low or when you have no money left?

I think this has changed over the past couple of years, as I noticed today my "Hubble bubble" has gone from being under 50p per portion to 81.5p per portion.

Do under 50p per portion meals still exist?

I'd be really interested in your opinions and recipes and any that you have noticed that have specifically gone from being cheapest to luxury!

    I'm not that way reclined

Jewelry? Seriously? Sheldon you are the most shallow, self-centered person I have ever met. Do you really think that another transparently-manipu... OH, IT'S A TIARA! A tiara; I have a tiara! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me!

    Hubble Bubble?

    Sorry lol!
It was taken from an autumn recipe book.
It's baked beans, tinned tomatoes, bacon tarragon, Worcestershire sauce- I put it in the slow cooker and usually add peas too.

Tuna and pasta is still my top favourite.

Pasta is less than 10p for 100g if you buy the cheap stuff, tuna is 75p a tin, half a tin per serving.

Add a bit of mayonnaise, job done.
