bought 02 contract phone for girlfriend . contract over -options?

i bought an o2 phone on a years contract for my girlfriend and now the contract is almost up.

to avoid the phone still being my responsibility regarding upgrades etc can anyone tell me what my options may be?

Cancel the o2 contract and buy a pay as you go o2 sim card as you get great deal's on pay as you talk with them

so if she wanted to be on a contract she would need to get a new phone and a new contract .?
