I too get disheartened by the massive mortgages being cleared, we're a couple but fairly low earners, so just keep plodding on.
but im totally in awe of you guys doing it alone... keep it up!

I've just read your diary and can't believe how much you have paid off in a short space of time. How have you managed to make so many OPs working part time? I think you must be very good at budgeting. I have a small mortgage but also a smallish salary, so it seems impossible to find much to OP.

Hi ND - I'm not sure I have posted on your diary before so de-lurking to say hi.

Everyone is on their own journeys and so try not to compare yours with anyone elses (I get this is easier said than done as I'm one of the worst for this too!). Don't feel disheartened...you are doing a fabulous job.. and just think what position you would be in if you hadn't come this far!

Keep going - the end will be here before you know it ;)

  • My OPs are called not having a social life whatsoever! I dont drink alcohol or smoke. We havent had a holiday abroad for about 5 years, we just do cheap caravans. I have a grocery budget of £140 and my diesel budget is only £90 and most months I only use about £50 unless I go visiting family.
I work part time but I get tax credits which helps A LOT. My kids dont need childcare anymore and that makes such a difference.
I use my SC most weeks and bulk the food out to make extra to freeze.
I dont really spend money on myself at all, I buy CS clothes. I try and buy whoopsie items (sometimes you can get a real bargain)
There are loads of other little things that I do and that I used to do when I was full on this. It used to take over my life til I got to breaking point one time. I didnt do it properly for a while but still did the odd OP if I had the spare.
Now I am back on it as I am so close BUT I am putting money aside for when I can OP again in November but now I am thinking of putting it towards a holiday abroad next year instead.
The only thing that makes me think to OP it is that my std MP/OP is £880 and when I go to SVR I am upping it to £930. If I OP and knock a month or two off then those two months MPs can go towards the holiday instead.

  • My MF plans are to do the house up (much needed!!) new kitchen, bathroom and redecorate every room. The hallway hasnt been done for 15 years!
I will need a new mortgage just for that lot! Probably about 18 months of saving for all that.
Then just save save save for my forever home wherever that may be :)
