  • Someone upthread mentioned Suzy Splash, i'll second that, that little bit higher making easy access, nice to drive, decent all round visibility, and a proper auto box coupled to the 1.2 engine.

Don't whatever you do let your mum be sold one of those evil automated manual satan boxes whatever car she wants, horrible horrible things.

Vauxhalls Agila is the same car, if thats more convenient dealerwise.

Always found Suzy dealers to be that bit more customer friendly than Vx, but that only my opinion.
  • I highly recommend a VW Up/Seat Mii/Skoda Citigo :)

One important question that everyone has missed.....

    Automatic or Manual ?

If Auto - I would recommend a Splash - most of the alternatives have a CVT/semi-automatic type of mechanism, which tends not to be as smooth as the conventional (though slightly less fuel efficient) Torque convertor type some are almost "converted" manual boxes..
Your mum needs to have a proper test drive in whatever she chooses (ie a weekends use)

If MANUAL - ignore the above. But still try the Splash !!
It now has a decent engine from the Swift and can be bought VAT free
  • Brilliant,

thanks so much. We now have a shortlist of around eight cars to have a look at. I will report back with what she decided to go with.

BTW 50Twuncle, I hadn't thought of this, so did ask her. A very straight NO was the response, so manual it is, but on reflection, at Mum's age, an automatic might be better.
  • Thanks everyone, some really interesting suggestion.
I'm a little worried about the Kia only having a 1l engine. Where mum lives is vey hilly.
Mines the 1.25 eco, quite nippy when run in.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.
  • As promised, a quick update.

Even though it does not get particularly good reviews, my mum went with the Nissan micra acenta. Got a good deal with three years servicing included. It drives well, no cabin rattles, a high driving position, which is what she wanted, a height adjustable seat which makes getting in and out very easy.

Thanks for all the input on this
