New car for elderly mum

Options
Hi,

Looking for some advice. My 89 year old mum currently has a honda jazz, 54 plate. It is beginning to go wrong, small issues, but she has decided she would like to replace it.

It will only be a runaround, going to the shops and out to lunch with her friends. Can anyone recommend something suitable, inexpensive to both buy and run, and small.

Thanks

I was going to suggest a Honda Jazz before I even entered the thread :D

Something like a Nissan Micra, Citroen C1 would suffice, but whats wrong with her current motor? fixing what she has would be MUCH cheaper :)
  • Whatever you do replace it with a Japanese built car (again)

When I read the thread title I thought the op was asking if they were getting a good deal by swapping an old lady for a car.

According to Which? magazine, very easy to get in & out of. Plus other features.
    Nice to save.

What is going wrong with the Jazz, it isn't old and they are usually very reliable.

I second the Nissan micra. My grandad swore by it. Cheap to run, easy to look after and handy for nipping to the shops or for a Sunday drive
  • Many thanks for all the replies. The one which made me laugh the most was by patman99. Thank you.

GwylimT, not a lot really. Small niggles. The latest is that the ABS light has come on. Her local garage said it needed a new battery, changed it; it wasn't and the light is still on. They then said it was something else (I live a long way away so couldn't go with her) that would cost I think 1-2000. We rang the local honda dealer for advice, but were not very forthcoming. They have a bit of a rep. For being a bit sharp. I guess mum thinks that a new car will not need to be constantly in garages that she feels less and less inclined to negotiate with. At her age I don't blame her.

    Thanks all for the suggestions.

The ABS light being on will most probably be a dirty sensor which needs cleaning (its the first thing to try anyway). If its the ABS ECU, get one from here: http://www.ecutesting.com/catalogue/product/honda_jazz_abs_pump__ecumodule_combined_amc497519.html

After owning 4 Honda's, I can say from experience, main dealers are rubbish, especially if she's elderly, they are probably just trying to screw more money out of her! :(

Thanks for this. Someone else said it might be the sensor and it was her local garage which Said 1-2k. I get the feeling that they are trying to rip her off. Horrible, but I live a long way away and don't know the local mechanics. Perhaps the thing is to try and find her somewhere else to take it.

Very much so. I'd make some phone calls to garages near her and try and find a good one (hard to judge on the phone, maybe if you post what area she is in, someone can recommend a good garage near her).

Certainly shouldn't be that much money. You can buy a whole Honda Jazz for that!
