Outstanding water bill - covering 10 years

Hi

my father recently had a debt agency contact him for an outstanding water for just over £4,000 over a 10 year period - he thinks he has paid some of this but not entirely sure and no evidence to cover we have paid half and asked for copies of the bill which we have yet to receive and it looking like we want - where do we stand - he's current bill is for 400. for the year so do quite sure how they have a fig over 4,000 i'm certain you would not have being paying 400 a year back in 1993

can anyone advise or point me in the right direction?

Regards

    Welcome to the forum.

We really need more details. Had the water company chased your dad for the money?

Firstly they can only go back 6 years under Statute.

Secondly, I simply wouldn't deal with the DCA at all. Write a formal letter to the water company, copied to the DCA, asking for 'chapter and verse' about the Debt.
  • second the above, also is there a meter fitted or a not has he moved property in this time that may or may not have had a meter installed there?
  • Hi

The Water board hadn't chased for the bill previously, the water company are refusing to speak to us now that the DCA are chasing nor will either of them send us the bills to show the breakdown - he is not on a meter read and has lived at the address for nearly 20 years and as far as he is aware never paid a water bill in that time nor received a bill until last year.

That statement seems to conflict with your first post:

Did you write formally to the water company or phone? You must write a letter headed 'complaint'. A phone call is just useless at this stage.

I suggest you contact the Consumer Council for Water and ask them to investigate.

Did he register with the water utility when he moved into the property? If he's aware that he's never received a bill, why didn't he act rather earlier?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
