Any help appreciated.

We have been with Sky for years, telly, broadband Sky talk. We are thinking of keeping the broadband and Sky talk, cancelling the T.V package and buying a Humax Freeview + HD T.V recorder, we have a HD Ariel on the roof and we just wanted to ask if these boxes are easy to set up, as we are not very technically minded at all. Or would it be better to move to new provider altogether, e.g. Talk Talk, any help would be appreciated.
Thank's

Humax plugs into your Sky dish as far as I know, I got this from reading threads, having not actually used one?
    Simples unless I'm wrong?

No a freeSAT humax box plugs into dish.
freeVIEW box plugs into aerial as op states.

Both very easy to setup, if it was me I would be looking at the freeSAT box, such as: http://www1.humaxdirect.co.uk/Direct/Prod/12940bc0-d3b6-444b-885a-857a89f6ccd4

As a side comment you certainly do not have a HD aerial on the roof, no such thing exists.

There is no such thing, aerials are SD/HD agnostic. You might have needed a new one when the switchover occured but that was nothing to do with being "HD ready"!

Hope you weren't scammed into buying a special HD aerial.

    Hi Just,

All boxes today are plug and play. You just plug it in and off you go with simple on-screen set up instructions. They will even auto-tune your TV channels too. Humax is a very good make. I would recommend their YouView box (which uses both an aerial and internet connection).

Heres the latest YouView model for £220 -

  • Thanks for the advice everyone. Will look at the sights you have highlighted. No we were not scammed into buying a new ariel, we needed a new one and friend fitted it for free.

Your choice of Freesat or Freeview will be determined by which channel line-up you want: there's not a great deal of difference.
Also consider the on-demand services: Freeview's YouView is currently rather more developed than Freesat's Freetime.
The boxes on both platforms are plug 'n' play; entering the postcode is about the most complex task you'll have to do.
PS: Ariel is a washing powder.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    I think you'll find Ariel is a mermaid...:rotfl:

OP, I recently cancelled my Sky TV and have done nothing, we are getting along nicely with what channels come free through the existing Sky box and dish. Maybe worth just trying for a month or two.
