Economy seven

Can anyone help. It has recently been discovered that I have incorrectly been on the Economy seven tariff for my electricty.

This has now been amended and meter has been changed over.

I have now asked EDF to that they should have realised sooner that they had me on the incorrect tariff and I should be compenstated for this.

They have offered be a good will payment of £25 which I think is ridiculous.

Can anyone offer and help or advice on this matter.

Thanks

E7 isn't automatically wrong - for some people's usage patterns it may be the cheapest option.

In fairness to EDF, it's up to you to know what tariff you are on and how it's metered - If you had checked the bills or supplied meter readings you should have realised what was going on.

So before going any further, you need to explain how and when the error occurred and for how long it's been going on.

IF EDF has been at fault, then what you could reasonably expect would be to be be paid back the difference between what you paid on E7 (at two different rates -one of which will be much lower than the standard rate), and what you would have paid on a single rate supply, (plus possibly a small amount for your inconvenience). So you need to do that calculation and go from there.

    Welcome to the forum.

YOU choose the company and tariff; so why are EDF wrong?

As said above E7 isn't automatically the wrong tariff. I have Gas CH and E7 because it slightly cheaper for my pattern of consumption.

Also there often isn't much difference between E7 and a normal 24/7 tariff. Your pattern of usage could change - for instance if people get up earlier in the morning. If your pattern of usage changes, should they change the meter again?

Indeed EDF might well be much more expensive than another supplier.

You are correct that it is ridiculous that EDF have offered you £25; I am amazed that EDF have offered you anything.

We had something similar a few years back.
We were on E7 - switched to a new supplier on a 'normal' tariff
I was surprised at first billing that we were on an E7 tariff
When I queried it they said it was because I had an E7 meter, then I had to have an E7 tariff!!!
It was an all singing & dancing electronic meter which gave night/day and total readings - so I rather naively assumed that they could use the 'total' reading as my leccy usage.
Sadly that was way too simple and they came out and fitted one of those 'old fashioned' spinning wheel meters.
    Progress eh!! :rotfl:
IIRC they gave me £20 after I grumbled

Some suppliers - BG and E-ON to name but two - do allow you to be on a 'normal' (i.e. 24/7) tariff with an E7 meter.

They simply add together the consumption shown of each register and treat as a total consumption. e.g. 200kWh off-peak and 1000kWh peak is treated as 1,200kWh.

Other companies multi- million pound billing computers cannot cope with adding two numbers together;)

Hmm, but the meter that I had did the addition for them... but still it wasn't good enough!!

EDF neither know nor care how you heat and hot water your house-so how are they supposed to know what is 'correct' or 'incorrect' in terms of tariff? That choice is that of the consumer.
If your meter is E7 and has an E7 meter number, then by default you'll be placed on an E7 tariff. Your first bill would clearly have shown that you were on an E7 tarif, but you failed to check it. Why should you be compensated for this?

I'd have to agree with Macman - if you don't read your bills properly then it's you who's to blame not the supplier. Just be pleased that they've offered you £25.
So stop whinging and read your bills in future
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers

Sorry, but I have to agree with matelodave. We have become a compensation culture. It is always someone elses fault - never my own mistake. I think under the circumstances you are lucky to have been offered the £25. As macman said, your bill will have clearly shown two sets of readings, one with the day tariff, and the low one for night....20 years ago people would of discovered it, said 'oh !!!!!!' if they realised it had cost them a bit more, and just got on with it.

And the universal advice given is that you grab the £25 before they change their minds about compensating you for something that is not their error, but yours.
