I sent a SAR off to 2 catalogues(both shop direct) and saw I had been paying extra care insurance. Realised this was PPI and put a claim in. Vaguely remembered contact being made for one of them, but thought it protected purchses in the same way as a credit card purchase does.
Anyway received form today for me to fill in and the dates are on them. One dates back to 1993 and the other to 1998!
Now I know that this may seem a bit dumb of me, but I honestly did not realise that a) I had this for so long and b) I don't remember taking it out at all.
My query is what do I put on the forms? Does I plead ignorance? I know that I should have noticed it on my statements, but as I said before thought that it was something that covered my purchases.
is it worth going ahead on this or not?
Looking back the dates tally up to when I first opened the catalogues. Sorry for rambling on, but I am so shocked amd embarrassed
that I have had this all this time and not realised.
Any help/advice would really be appreciated.

Just tell the truth and answer the questions as honestly as possible. Don't try to second guess or embellish your answers with unproveable allegations. The poet Robbie Burns explained things correctly 200 years ago when he wrote - "Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive".0

Thanks for this - honesty is def the best policy.
I have drafted up a supporting letter/statement just expressing my surprise/shock etc at the length of time that this has been in place.
During the period of this insurance I was made redundance and missed out on payment because I had not been in y job long enough. I actually worked for my parents at the time and had only been back in work after taking time out to raise my children for just under 2 years, so did not qualify for redundancy payment.
Also when one policy was taken out it was only a month after having my 2nd child and had decided to stay at home.
Should I point these facts out? I am still feeling really shocked and embarrassed about this!!

Probably best to focus on your complaint reasons. There is no need to make fill it with irrelevant points that take the focus away from your complaint.During the period of this insurance I was made redundance and missed out on payment because I had not been in y job long enough. You are complaining about the sale of the policy. Do either of these things have any relevance to the sale or are they things that occurred later? The pregnancy occurred later based on what you have said. Also when one policy was taken out it was only a month after having my 2nd child and had decided to stay at home.
Were you working at the point of sale?I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. A mis-selling complaint must focus on the actual purchase of the product, not events which took place later. Just fill in the form and discard your "supporting" letter, which has no bearing on your complaint.0 -
Hi, thanks for your replies. The only reason why this has got to me is that stupidly or not I believed that the cover protected purchases in some way. I believe that, when I obviously agreed to it, that it wasn't explained to me in detail - hence why I feel it has been missold. When the first was taken out in 1993, I was young and obviously naive - and probably thought it was something that you had to have on your account.
I can honestly say that it has never jumped out at me on statements.
I have looked copy statements and it is referred to as extra care insurance, not PPI. As I have already said I am berating myself for my stupidity!!0 -

You also cannot complain because you never checked the cover provided and "assumed" it covered purchases. The policy terms and conditions would have been provided for you to check. It would be different if you were told the policy covered your purchases, but obviously you were not.0 -
Shop Direct weren't regulated when this cover was sold to you [1993 is 12 years before they were regulated] so they could dismiss your complaint if they wanted to.
Bearing the above in mind, to complain, you need to show you didn't need the cover or that the cover was useless to you.Non me fac calcitrare tuum culi0
