Any recommendations for replacement combi boiler?

Well I think my Baxi Combi 80Eco (24kW I believe) is nearing the point where it will shuffle off its mortal coil (or should that be heat exchanger) and it would seem prudent to start seriously considering the need to replace it later this year as well as how many pennies I'm likely to need to save for it.

I have no idea how old exactly it is but I've been here 6 years and from what I recall when I bought the house, the previous owners didn't have it fitted either so I think we're looking at it being about 12 years old.

But, I have no idea what a suitable replacement would be nor what are considered the most reliable and efficient boilers - I know from the manual I found that the one I have is rated at 78.6% efficient so I'm guessing there are many more efficient boilers out there these days?

The property is a victorian, brick built mid-terrace with 2 bedrooms and there are 7 radiators in total. What would you suggest would be a suitable reliable and efficient replacement for this combi-boiler?

You may have to have your gas piping upgraded to meet new regulations. I'm having to have mine done in a 1971 built house.

If that refers to needing 22mm pipe for the gas feed to the boiler, think I'm okay as looks like I already have that.

Baxi duotec or Baxi platinum will have the exact same pipe work layout as your existing boiler although the flue hole will need moving slightly. 7 and 10 year warranty repectively. Decent boiler, reasonably priced with very good warranties.
  • I had mine done last year and it was just under £2500 to have a combi boiler. My house previously had 2 boilers so I had to have some of the pipe work rerouted. Have a new gas pipe fitted to comply with the new regs as mine was smaller and have rads fitted in my living room and one of the bedrooms that didn't have a rad. So he had to take the tanking off part of my cellar put the new pipes through and board it all back up. My boiler is a alpha but he did also quote me for a Worcester bosch one which I think was £200 more but recommended my boiler as he has fitted lots of them and the customer care is good.

I'm amazed how cheap my energy bills are this year

I can't advise on the technical aspects but my house is similar type and size to yours. I have a Vaillant one which is now 10 years old but still working very well. Have just had it serviced. If I had to replace it, I would want another Vaillant.

My gas man always recommends either Worcester Bosch or a Promax. Apparently they are well made and parts are readily available
Anything else is a poor 2nd choice
  • Each to their own. Personally I wouldn't touch wb.
  • I am a Gas Safe registered engineer and I strongly suggest the Ideal Logic plus combi. They have a seven year warranty, parts and labour and they are a good decent boiler.I fitted one at my mum and dads in November 2012 and they have not had any problems with it.

Thanks all for the suggestions - lots to think about. I'm usually very good at researching and making a decision on a purchase but boilers seem rather confusing so all opinions are gratefully received
