Indoor Cat?

Does anyone on the board keep or have kept an indoor cat. I am currently giving a lot of thought to getting a pet either a dog or a cat.

I am and have been a dog person for a long time, but equally I love cats. However I live in a flat, ground floor near a main road, so having a cat is perhaps not ideal especially one that goes outside.

A dog would be great but I do not have a garden and I am leaning more towards a cat.

I would be keen on taking on a older cat that perhaps needs a home, maybe one where it's owner has died.

I can offer a nice sofa, warm bed, perhaps a radiator bed, plenty of toys and lots of cuddles!

  • My cat is happy to stay indoors all of the time, only occasionally venturing out now and again, but she has always been able to go out so it's a habit for her. There are plenty of cats out there that would love to be indoor kitties. An older, rescue cat would love you!

I know... would love an older moggy, I always hate the idea of older animals (dogs and cats) living the remainder of their days in shelters!

Both of my cats are indoor cats, and they keep themselves busy enough :D I have climbing frames and loads of toys to keep them amused.

Have you considered a cat that can't go outside because of its health? There's loads of cats that need homes but are overlooked because they're missing a leg, or are blind or deaf.

A warm bed, plenty of toys and lots of cuddles sounds like a shelter cats dream come true :D

I had two cats. The female was much an indoor cat. She would venture out every now and again but only really if I thought she'd been cooped up for too long and needed the exercise. The male is a big soft lump and will come in to get fed, have a cuddle and sleep but he will not stay indoors for any length of time.
There may be posters on here that have had success with keeping a male indoors but the majority of friends who have males have all found that they need to get outside.

That sounds like a good idea. My local animal shelter often have cats and dogs up for fostering, in which you take in the pet and they cover medical costs / vet fees for existing illnesses. They don't usually have many cats for fostering but plenty of elderly dogs. I will certainly enquire with the Cats Protection League.

I keep popping into the local animal shelter, I regularly donate food etc. We also got our rescue Jack Russell from them 3 years ago, although technically he's my dad's dog and lives with him! :) - I think we share him though as I'm still his 'Mummy' :rotfl:

All of my cats are indoor cats, including males, have never ever had a problem with keeping a male cat indoors, mine are all rescues and I live on a busy bus route and they dont get out for obvious reasons.

I got a pair of 7 year old brothers from Cats Protection. They had been kept as house cats all their lives, living together (un-neutered ) in a small flat. Their owner was no longer able to look after them. When they came to me they did go outside occasionally for a few months but eventually they reverted back to being house cats again. They were perfectly happy with it.

I think with an older cat they're not as keen on the outside as maybe a younger one would be.

Thanks for that. I live on a main road, lots of buses and ambulances flying passed so it would not be right to have a cat that could get hurt.

Awww bless them. I like the idea of two so they could keep each other company, but the housing will only allow one pet per flat. A good friend recommended CP as she recently re-homed two after her other cat died.
  • my last 2 cats have been indoor cats. Leo was a 2 year old male who stayed indoors happily for 10 years before he passed away. my newest rescue is a small 'scaredy cat' found living rough on the street at 10 weeks old, she has never ventured near the door & runs & hides when I open it. she has warmth, food & shelter & happily plays on her 'jungle gym' scratch post all day.
please consider a cat from a rescue centre, they so need everyones help.
