"It's a band 75% wide across the centre, it doesn't have to be the middle 75%."

Mark_mark, a great loss to the Pedants Corps.

I'd go back and tell them you are having VOSA retest it if they don't do it again - and properly. Then get the tyres sorted, new tyres and balancing

Are you a bit touchy tonight? If you're going to post legislation why not get it correct?

No, I commented on my recollection, I didn't quote anyone but you. Perhaps you would like to expand on the difference between me saying, "central 75% of the tyre" and your interpretation. Or, perhaps not.

I don't have a tyre gauge, but there's definitely over 3mm on the left - more worn - side.

You may be right - but there are no tread wear indicators in your pic.

Take another pic a bit further round the tyre.
  • I thought tyres had markings these days... To tell you how far they are worn down, my continental sports do...

No it's not. That only applies to bikes, trikes under 450kg, vehicles first used before 1933, passenger vehicles with more than 9 seats and class 5 goods vehicles. they also have a minimum tread depth of 1mm instead of 1.6mm.

For cars it's a minimum 1.6mm across the central 75% of the tread breadth - it must be (more or less) central.

I would say from the picture above, it's illegal.

I wouldn't fancy my chances in court contesting it wasn't.

I recently changed a set of Toyos on my old car's wheels with exactly the same wear. Handled terrible in the wet.
