You "shouldnt" be parked on a road with trade plates on, so if you were staying over ideally you'd pack it off the road.

BUT as has been said, if the police see trade plates they tend not to bother with you too much.

Even if anyone queried it, "it's a 600 mile round trip, I'm taking a break and it made sense to do it here" should be enough to satisfy anyone half-way sensible. They can easily enough verify where the plates are registered, and where the "new" car has just come from to back the distance up.

Technically you can't have a car parked (unless in a breakdown or emergency) with its tax disc being replaced by trade plates. They're for testing, demonstrating or transporting vehicles between locations. That said, most Police, never mind the hobby bobbies haven't the first clue in their use and wouldn't get involved unless you seriously p'ed them off.

So you can't stop for a break? Techo rules etc if one fitted.

Thanks colino. still feeling a bit nervous driving it to my parents, and I was planning to stay overnight (culdesac parking) so I don't have to drive 600 miles in one day.

just get the feeling that the police will see the trade plates and just pull me to check if alls legit just as im turning into my parents drive. (my parents have nothing to do with the business so I wont have an excuse).

You aren't worried about the plates being nicked overnight? As said I would remove them.
  • assume cars mot as well as trade plates dont cover that..I see many cars advertised with no tax or test and seller says "bring trade plates and drive away)

You can actually, so long as you're driving to a prebooked mot.

It has been tested in court that you can detour to take a break, though I don't believe this was done for a big excursion.from the route.

I am personally of the experienced opinion that most traffic police don't know any more than the average member of the public about the laws surrounding trade plates.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
