Hi
Im going to be delivering a car to a trader and then bring a another car back. The journey is over 300 miles one way. There is trade insurance in place.
it so happens that the city where the car is being delivered to (and second car collected) is where my parents stay, so I was going to deliver the first car, pick up the second car and then go and see my parents before driving back home.
As I will be using trade plates, is this allowed or breaking the law? If the police stop me whilst im pulling outside my parents house for example, will I get fined?
Thanks

Technically you can't have a car parked (unless in a breakdown or emergency) with its tax disc being replaced by trade plates. They're for testing, demonstrating or transporting vehicles between locations. That said, most Police, never mind the hobby bobbies haven't the first clue in their use and wouldn't get involved unless you seriously p'ed them off.0

is it also true can you only drive as fast as 50 mph on trade plates?
and that you cant stop at a shop to buy something? (petrol station- can I get a drink as long as ive filled up?)0 -
Rubbish, in fact I can drive at any speed I like with my old paper licence. It states "tear down the dotted line".
Trade Plates replace the tax disc for the trade, they have no other effect whatsoever.0 -
Thanks colino. still feeling a bit nervous driving it to my parents, and I was planning to stay overnight (culdesac parking) so I don't have to drive 600 miles in one day.
just get the feeling that the police will see the trade plates and just pull me to check if alls legit just as im turning into my parents drive. (my parents have nothing to do with the business so I wont have an excuse).0 -
You mean your not going there to demonstrate it?0

If they do, could you not tell them they're considering buying the car, and they want to go on an accompanied test drive?
Then, take them for a test drive with the policeman following. When you get back to theirs, drop them off and then leave.
Of course, if you don't get pulled, no problem.0 -

If you're stopped on the way to or from your parents, you're going to do a viewing with a customer at their home.
You "shouldnt" be parked on a road with trade plates on, so if you were staying over ideally you'd pack it off the road.
BUT as has been said, if the police see trade plates they tend not to bother with you too much.0 -
Perhaps more to the point, what insurance are you doing this on? If it's a traders policy and you're an employee, the trip to your parents may not be covered as it's not part of your employer's business. It come under SDP for which only the trader and named drivers is covered.0

If you are an employee of the owner of the trade-plates then you'll be fine.
Staying over with your parents before returning should be no big deal as it's the same city - it's not like you're making a big diversion to visit them.
Just don't leave the car parked in the street with trade-plates still on.
Get the car off the road and in your parents' drive or garage overnight. If on the drive take the plates off and keep them indoors.0 -
kool, thanks all.0
