Real-life MMD: Waitress takes leftovers to give to a retirement home. Should I report
Comments

Surely the Home should be providing cakes etc. for its residents rather than relying on staff to provide leftovers which are very likely to be past their safe eat by date. In any event if residents are welcoming this additional food it sounds like the Home is not giving them enough food in the first place. Cakes, biscuits and nutritious fluids should be available at all times and should be regularly offered, particularly for people with dementia who may forget to eat and may need encouragement to eat. I would be interested in whether there is a problem with weight loss at this Home and any other Homes that readers of this topic may visit as this is one of the most common dangers to health in older people.0

Why? What has it got to do with you? Leave your colleague get on with her life and you get on with yours.0

why would you even consider reporting her?! it's not affecting you in any way, can't believe some people, she could lose her livelihood, just for doing a good deed, albeit against your company policy. Leave her be!0

No you should NOT report her. Mind your own business the woman is trying to do people a good turn, and it is scandalous to throw good food away.
Don't be a blabber mouth ! !0 -
I do hope all the people on here telling the OP to mind her own business never throw any food away and take it all as treats to old folks homes.0

There was a lot of food left over at family "do" & a relative asked if he could take it to his church drop-in centre. The caterer said yes, but I did suggest that he didn't take the egg mayo for example. Have done catering myself & have FH certs. On the whole I think the 4hr rule is conservative with MOST foods, but things like eggs and prawns are high risk. Egg mayo sarnies are popular, but when catering I would only provide them if they could be refrigerated until buffet began.0

Absolutely not, obviously (!!!) What she's doing is fantastic, I really hope that she doesn't get in trouble for it. Food waste is immoral.0

As long as hand on heart, all the food is going out and it is only genuine leftovers going to the old folks' home, I cannot see why she shouldn't keep on doing this with food that is otherwise going in the bin.
If the home is aware and not bothered about the length of time the food has been on display, then I don't see it as an issue. It is the waitress's liability if she gives them the food, there is a problem and the home subsequently blames her, but I cannot see the catering company being held liable because (a) it is being done without their knowledge and (b) against their rules.0 -
Folk who steal often claim it's for poor sick old relative etc, so they don't look so bad or even a hero, lol. Obviously we all like a treat and if she really is given the food to an old folks home (after her and her family take what they want), then she is handing over food that has been left out for hours and could make the old folk ill. It's not likely her mum is going to deliver it straight away, if the food really goes to the home, it will be taken when she starts her next shift. So the food is been left out or stored again, which could be stored once more when it arrives at the home. Several times the food will have been stored in the fridge, out on display, transported 3 times (caterers, waitress and mum), sounds like a great way for bacteria to multiply and make the old folk very ill.
I'm not into dobbing in, but I would have a word with the waitress and highlight that she is stealing, putting her job and reputation at risk, plus risking the health of the old folk she claims it goes to. In addition, highlight that as you have seen her taking the food, so will others, so it won't be long before she's found out.0
