Smoking in Cars Carrying Children

I agree with Ebe Scrooge. What next? A ban on smoking in your own house if a child is present? I thought all this nanny state nonsense was on the decline when Labour finally lost power. Sure, you shouldn't be subjecting your children to second hand smoke, but you have to let adults/parents make their own decisions in life. There's a thousand instances where the nanny state could intervene (for what they think is the greater good) but it doesn't mean they should.
By the way I've never smoked in my life .
Well I have always smoked but for years now (20yrs) I have not smoked in the house, children or no children. I go outside when it's not raining, and in the shed when it is. I last smoked in my or any other car in 1980. I stop in a layby, car park, in fact anywhere so that I can have a fag. I've even been known to stop on the hard shoulder of the M4, have a piddle behind a bush on the embankment followed by a fag whilst sitting on the crash barrier!0 -

The NHS would save a big chunk of that if it didn't have to treat the effects of smoking.

That's £5Bn 8 years ago.
Personally if people are stupid enough to smoke then more fool them, just try to prevent them inflicting others who don't smoke.
I would support the legalising of ALL drugs as it would free the Police to do concentrate on more serious crime and it would also reduce related crime, but that's off topic.
Back on topic I support the principle of this law but suspect it will be hard to police, driving while smoking should be an offence regardless of whether there are children or passengers in the car anyway as it is dangerous.Make £2018 in 2018 Challenge - Total to date £2,1080 -

well here is something to think about, my half brother who's 60 this month has a slight chough, which was brought on by his mother and her partner smoking in the car when he was younger, she died of cancer a few years ago, also my mum smoked until she was 45, she is now 86 and has lots of medical issues, including breathing, she is on oxygen for 15 hours a day.:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I'm sorry to hear that, but in my opinion you are scaremongering.
Is there any definitive proof that because he inhaled 2nd hand smoke when young AND in the car, he has the problems today? Or is it simply an assumption?
There is NO medical evidence that can prove that smoking causes these problems.
The government and the doctors will try to tell you that there is, but none, as far as I know, ever published the proof other than statistics. And we all know how statistics can be interpreted depending on what you want them to show.
The government even blamed localised climate change on the number of cows in a particular area stating that they 'fart' too much.0 -

For decades the govt did nothing about smoking, most people smoked and the tobacco companies were sending a lot of money into the greedy pockets of govt officials to keep the "status quo".
They lie to us a lot, about a lot of things (climate change for one), but when it comes to inhaling anything other than fresh clean air, it's common sense that it can only be harmful.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Only a complete moron would light up a fag in a car when children present.
I am astonished that this practice should require a "plan" by the politicians before banning it and that the Government thinks that public information campaigns are preferable.
How stupid can people be?
The last time I looked at the figures for motor vehicle accidents I noticed that in one year alone there were around 12,000 people killed or seriously injured on the roads, of which one third (4,000) were children.
Well done the government for taking firm and decisive action to stop all this unnecessary slaughter and mutilation.0 -
I am amazed that a smoker would light up in a car with any non smoker in there, child or otherwise. Although I am equally amazed that someone finds it essential to smoke in a car full stop, is it really that difficult to wait a while?
And before anyone suggests otherwise, I am a smoker!0 -

Indeed.

Fallen from around 8,000 deaths per year in the late 1960s to under 2,000 today, despite much greater vehicle use.
Thanks largely to government intervention.Make £2018 in 2018 Challenge - Total to date £2,1080
