Bali

Having pretty much decided on lake Garda this year, were seeing a last ditch thing for Bali where we've always wanted to go. So if we can't go this year, it'll definitely be next year

Can we get something decent for under 1500pp inc flights for 10 to 14 nights? Or even close to a grand? Even if its slightly later like sept? Or no chance? Is 10n enough or a good 14 required?

  • Where have you looked so far? You could see everything in 10 nights

  • As in locations? Not sure with exact names. Had a look
At some comparison sites that had prices around £1500pp and more for flight & hotel. An agent here emailed with a 5* for 3k total.

Apparently flights aren't direct? Not good for dh who's scared!

    What are the best locations?

I'm not sure if any plane can fly that far non-stop (I assume you mean non-stop).

Depending on what airline you fly with, you'll either stop in Bangkok (Thai), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysian), Hong Kong (Cathay Pacific), Singapore or somewhere in the middle east.
You're talking 12 hours non-stop to somewhere in the Far East plus another 3 - 3.5 hours on to Bali.

    We've usually flown with Malaysian.
You check in for both flights (e.g. LHR - KUL & KUL - DPS) at departure airport and your luggage is routed all the way through so you don't have to claim it and recheck it.

Best locations depend on what you like.
    Busy? quiet?

Personally, if I was travelling all that way, I'd want more than 10 nights (but maybe I'm just greedy ;)).
I'd do more research about what there is to see - maybe you'd want to go to Java to visit Borobudur or maybe to Lombok.

You could check out flight prices yourself and then book accommodation separately.

I think you may get some good advice on the Tripadvisor Bali forum.

    Take note of rainfall.

    Thank you

Haven't done long haul in a while, reckon separate flight & hotel booking is comparable to package?

Not looking for mad busy like clubs eft, somewhere quiet but not remote, where we can base ourselves for visiting places locally & slightly further

Quick q, I have read about the variety of global food there, but wonder if one of us being allergic to nuts, fish & egg would cause issues due to the strong fish cuisine & things made in nut oil, ESP foods made with the same pans etc?

With a lot of Indonesian food, it is cooked in peanut oil, or peanuts are made into a satay sauce. Eggs are also used a lot in dishes i.e Nasi Goreng, which is a fried rice dish.
As there are many islands, fish does figure prominently of course. There is also the possibility of fish sauce or paste being used in the cooking and flavouring of the food.
If you have allergies to these products, then you will have to choose very wisely as to what you are going to eat.

we dont mind if one of us doesnt eat the local cuisine, since its not the local cuisine we are specifically seeking out when visiting abroad. we have had reassurance on tripadvisor forum as to the huge array of non-local cusine on offer, which is reassuring

You should be OK then as there are probably lots of Italian and Australian type restaurants there. Have not been for a number of years now, but moved over to Lombok after 1 night in Bali.
If one of you has a allergy to certain foods, then it does make life more difficult for eating out.

It is many years since I last visited Bali, so I'm sure everything has changed now. We stayed in Sanur at the Bali Beach hotel, which has since changed it's name I understand and I don't know what it is now. Sanur is a lovely area and quieter than some, I really enjoyed it.
I am led to believe that the Kuta beach area is to the Aussies what Benedorm is to the Brits!!

I loved Bali and the people are great.

I've never been to Bali, but someone on another forum planted a seed in my head a few days ago. So I got on with organising 4 weeks away this September.

Although not the cheapest (£575 pp return) I decided to book the flights direct with Garuda Indonesia. The outward flight from Gatwick is at 1300, and the return is due back in Gatwick at 1155.

We pick up passengers at Amsterdam, and then it's a long flight to Jakarta. At Jakarta we got a 2 hour stopover before getting a 2 hour flight to Bali

Departure and Arrival times at Gatwick mean we don't have to stay overnight at a Gatwick hotel, or have to drive at silly o'clock. We will travel up by train from Pompey in the the morning, so don't have to worry about parking either.

Taking the domestic logistics and costings into consideration results in the overall travel costs being reasonable.

We're going for 4 weeks (24 Sep to 23 Oct), so I now had to think about accommodation.

I'm a member of Airbnb (free to join), and recently used them to stay with a lovely Hindu family in Kathmandu. So I decided to use Airbnb again.

I've booked our first week in Sanur...

    http://wikitravel.org/en/Sanur

... which is only a short taxi ride from the airport, and a bit quieter than the main resorts of Kuta, Legian & Seminyak...

    https://www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/2496595?s=_n_W

    Paid £96 for that.

And then we'll move on to Ubud....

    http://wikitravel.org/en/Ubud

At Ubud I've managed to bag a great deal of £157 for 7 nights B&B for the pair of us on Booking.com at this place...

    http://www.baliagungrakaresort.com/

So far I've spent £253 for 2 weeks B&B. The 2nd place is a bit of a splurge, but I couldn't resist the price. My aim is to spend no more than that for the other 14 nights.

Our spending money budget will be £250 per week, to cover everything else. As eating out is inexpensive, and getting around by public transport/pushbike is cheap then we shouldn't have a problem.

So our overall costs for 4 weeks for 2 of us will be circa...

    - Travel to and from LGW - £50.
    - Flights - £1,155
    - Accommodation (B&B) in 4 different parts of Bali - £500
    - Spending Money - £1,000

    TOTAL (for 4 weeks) - £2,755

    Pete - Bali is great.

But listen mate, I strongly and seriously recommend that at the very least you snip some of your time and do 5 days in Eastern Java (Kawah Ijen, Bromo, Yogyakarta) and a few days in Lombok (Gilli islands) Longer in Eastern Java would be great as it is about 1/3 the cost of Bali and there is loads to do.

You know I have traveled extensively and I have set to see anything as spectacular as the sunrise over Kawah Ijen (which actually can be done from Bali as a night trip)

    http://thesummerholidayofalifetime.blogspot.co.uk/2013/08/kawah-ijen.html

Indonesia is my favourite SE Asian country. 4 weeks is perfect, but I would certainly start in Surabaya - Bali - Lombok - Nusa Tenggara - Komodo

Have a look at Pelni :)
