Bank failed to remove Default/delinquent credit report

Anybody Help?
I had disagreement with my bank in 2005. They said I owed them £6000 (£3000 overdraft and £3000 charges). I disputed the charges which they agreed to waiver and paid them £3000 in "full and final settlement". They agreed and accepted it. 6 months later I found they had placed a Default notice on my credit record for £6000.
On six separate occasions they profusely apologised and promised to get it removed. It was removed from one agency but I then found it on another. Again they apologised and promised to remove it. They said it would take 6 - 8 weeks. That was in 2011. I then forgot to check. I now find it is still on my record.
Surely that is libellous? A defamation of character?
Should I expect compensation for that? I am sure, though can't prove it, that I have had credit/mortgage applications turned down because of it. They have offered £250 compensation. That's about a 25% of the additional interest I pay per month as I can't move my mortgage.
It's now been a week since I've asked them for contact details for their Head of Customer Relations and the manager of the Service Improvement Team (with whom I last discussed the problem) so I can again TELL them to remove it but so far, despite two additional requests, have not received those details.
They are "Investigating" it - I've only asked for contact details!
Any suggestions what I should/could do?
Rod.

What default date is showing on your credit files?
A default dated say 2006 would have dropped off anyway by 2012.
So for it still to be on your file now would suggest it has been re-added to your file at a later point (and even if a valid default originally that is not allowed).
Have you ever made a written complaint? or were the previous discussions with them and apologies from the all by 'phone? I would write to them now. As you then start the timescale for making a complaint about them to the FOS.
Occasionally people do manage to get a bank to pay nominal compensation for this type of error, but as you have said its impossible to prove that you have had applications declined that would have been accepted if it wasn't on your file.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
I suggest you complain to the Financial Ombudsman Service.
This will take a long time but in view of the time they have taken to date, it will probably be quicker!0
