Can I return something to re-buy it at the sale price?

I've had that heartsink situation where you buy something and then 2 weeks later see it in the sale! What are the rules around buying it in the sale and then returning it with the full-price receipt?

Thanks! :)

Depends entirely on the shop's return policy. You have no legal entitlement.

//awaits the inevitable "Would you give them more money if the price had gone up" comments
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.
  • Thanks halibut. And yes, I should probably specify I'm not looking for moral guidance on this, just legal! The shop has a 28 day returns policy.

If the store has a policy allowing you to return the item, then of course you may do so within that policy.
But, they're not obliged to then re-sell you the item at the discounted price. Worth a go, but depends how badly you actually want the item I guess.
  • would you return it if the price had gone up and pay the higher price!

As others have posted, if the shop allows you to return an item because you changed your mind then yes, you'll get your money back.

But there's no guarantee that they'll put the item you returned back into stock at the sale price and even if they do intend to do that, you may have to hang around until they actually so that.

As aldredd says, you have to decide whether you really want to keep the item at the full price - and you must have done 2 weeks ago as you paid the full price for it - or risk returning it, getting your money back and then maybe not being able to re-buy at the sale price.

Of course, if there are rails and rails (or shelves and shelves) of the same item at the sale price, you won't have a problem.
  • Thanks! :rotfl:

However I would say that from your post saying that you would buy it at the discounted rate and then return that item with the full price receipt - Is that not fraud?

That's what I was wondering. I might just go to them and ask! Then it's upfront at least!
