I posted a Samsung mobile phone I'd sold on Ebay recently and the Post Office counter asked if it contained a battery, and then what type of battery. I wasn't quite such which battery technology the particult Samsung phone used, but thankfully they accepted the parcel!

They do always ask the value of contents, I think to sell more expensive insured services. Standard first or second class used to be guaranteed up to £42, but that has dropped to £20 now, I guess for the same reason. Now they are private I suppose profit will be their focus sadly.

    Who are 'they'?
This is a thread about Post Office counters
    Which is not 'private'

But do remember to tell them there are no batteries in it ;)

Provided that you are only sending one or two phones then there shouldn't be any need to take the batteries out or lie about what the package contains..
Lithium batteries are not prohibited by RM, simply restricted to a maximum of two per package and these must be fitted to the equipment they are for and there are packing conditions that must be followed.

The staff in my local Post Office are always very friendly :)

I've never been asked what is inside the parcels I'm sending.

I've sold a lot of my clothes that are too big on EBay and I've had responses from 'oh it's ok if it's all clothing' to demands to know exactly what is in each parcel  I don't see why it should matter whether it's a hoodie or a football shirt or a pair of jeans it's all clothing what's it to them?!

That's the issue l feel, each member of staff appear to interpret the guidelines (whatever they are) in their own way. Next time they ask you consider saying there is nothing prohibited or restricted and watch their face drop.

So I'm not sure exactly what you're trying to achieve other than to add fuel to a fire and make a situation even more difficult.

What l am attempting to achieve at this time is to obtain from Royal Mail Counters what the guidelines issued to counter staff is in relation to what they should actually be asking customers.

Fully appreciate that this may seem petty to some, but for me it's not.

Thank you all for your comments so far.

Well wouldn't it make more sense to ask their head office? Then you'd know the correct information rather than just trying to be clever when you post something.

Getting the right company would be a start.

I had spotted he'd got the wrong company but thought I'd leave it to the expert just to make sure. ;)
