Switching Nightmare

Hi All...Losing the will to live
Problem..Via this site i switched to a fixed Energy tariff in November 2012. I switched from British Gas to Scottish Power,.Direct Debit set and is being paid..British Gas however insist they are still my supplier for Gas. Checking my online account with BG it seems my Electric was closed at point of switch but not my gas..I have contacted both suppliers re this and both insist they supply my gas.
BG are now sending me email requests for current meter readings and estimated bills...I have told them time and time again they are no longer my Supplier and that i am paying another supplier for my gas ..Yet again this morning another e/mail asking for the same details i have given them on numerous occasions..ie..Termination Date..Termination Reading and Current Reading.
I have questioned why they need a current meter reading they seem to just ignore.

I am fed up with each supplier just batting me backwards and forwards..

Any advice Guys?:mad::mad::mad:

It would be as well to check the agency that holds the central records of which company supplies your Gas - You can do this with a phone call to:
0870 608 1524 - You will need a bill to hand as they want the meters details

If they report that BG are recorded as your supplier, WRITE a letter headed Comlpaint to Scot Power, as it their responsibility to inform the Central Record office that they had taken over the supply, and also was thier duty to advise BG that you were moving supplier and the meter reading on change-over day

If the agency report that Scot Power are logged as your supplier, WRITE a letter headed Complaint to BG, asking why they are pursueing payment from you for Gas supplied after you Switched to SP on xx date, when the Switch to SP has been correctly registered on the Central Date base
  • Thank You..looks like Scottish power are in the wrong..I am indeed still with BG..

OK - As BG have not been paid for the Gas they supplied since the date and meter reading from the date? which EDF started billing you for gas, I'm not surprised they are applying pressure.

It's important that you act quickly before BG lose patience and involve Debt Collectors/Court Warrents/Fitting a PAYGO meter
Get that letter headed Complaint off to Scot Power a.s.a.p., pointing out their lack of registration as your supplier on the National Data Base and demanding that they immediately return to you the monies you have paid to them for Gas as you need these funds to meet the bills from your rightful supplier, BG

To keep BG sweet, WRITE to (Don't phone) them explaining the problem you have had with Scot. Power, your contact with Data Base to resolve the problem and encloseing a copy of your Complaint letter to SP
  • Ok..Just called Scottish Power and got then to Confirm yet again they are my Supplier..Confirmed and they use a Data Base called XO serve..
Spoke then with BG. Who it appears had problems with accounts closing end of Nov 2013...They are now looking to close my Account with them as what they called a delayed closure..Why BG have not advised me of previous problems with account closure is beyond me with all the correspondence that has passed between us is beyond me..That information came from Scottish Power..But thanx for the direction as wasn't aware a data base existed ..
  • Hang on, the central metering database which you called earlier said you were with BG, correct?

You've then phoned SP, who tell you you're with them? Correct?
  • Yes to Both..But it seems BG didn't close my account as they should of done so it was still showing as active...
  • You should have followed dogshome advice.

If the central metering database say that you're with BG, and they are basing this on the meter number that is physically on your meter, believe them.

British Gas have your supply. Scottish Power do not. You've been paying SP for thin air, and it's all their fault.

Stop telephoning people, and write to the relevant parties immediately. Of course the systems the SP call handler used says you're with them - they've been billing you for over a year!
  • I have taken his advice and put both Suppliers a letter in post..I only switched in November 2013..so in fact that's 2 months..

BG..Have now closed the account so it seems they were the one,s in the wrong not Scottish Power...The National Data Base shows i,m still with BG as BG failed to close Account due to problems from there end..

    Your original post states 2012.

It is the gaining suppliers responsibility to carry out the transfer without exception.

You've been paying SP money for gas they haven't supplied, hopefully BG will write it off as 2 months won't be worth that much, but this is just supposition. Good luck.

This is becoming a farce, but I don't think the OP will be laughing

As I understand it, the customers new chosen supplier intitiates the switch by the informing the Central Agency, and then the Agency passes the request on to old supplier, if the old supplier doesn't object for reasons of debt, after a further exchange of meter readings on Switch-Day, the Switch is complete
The old supplier doesn't have to "close" the account as the supplier has already been changed on the data base

I have a terrible feeling that the OP is being misled by phone calls to Customer Service Desks, who are unreliable at the best of times let alone with a very rare problem such this one, and so far as SP's assurance that YES they are the registered supplier on the Gas Date Base because they have checked it on Xoserve - The 0870 608 1524 phone number the OP rang to be told the supplier is BG, is in fact Xoserve !
