I always do 2-3 nights in Bangkok at the start of the trip and then head straight home at the end but you could do it either way. Or bookend your trip and do both. It's just a matter of preference. If you have an early morning flight back to the UK then you may need to do a final night in Bangkok anyway.

I'm not a shopper at all but I suppose if you do want to go crazy in the malls then it would be better to do that at the end so you aren't carrying everything around Thailand with you.

Thanks for this, am now in process of narrowing down hotels and contacting them direct to see what they can offer

We are just back from Bangkok. We stayed at the Chatrium Riverside and liked it.

It's always worth contacting hotels directly to see what they can do for you but you can often get cheaper rates by going through a third party.

If you want shopping then look at the Silom and Sukhumvit areas near a Sky Train station.

We've stayed in loads of accommodation in Bangkok at all budget levels. But the last one in March was our favourite, and the one we'll be heading for again next time we're in BKK.

So, it's the New Siam Riverside for me...

Great value considering it's right on the river.

You can easily spend hours or days trawling through all the accommodation websites, and still choose the wrong place. And as there's 1000s of choices in Bangkok I'd personally stick to recommendations from folk you can trust.

Thanks for your recommendation, is this hotel easily accessible to other parts of bangkok and near sky train?

Unfortunately it's not on the Sky Train network but it is close (but not too close!) to the cheap bars and shops of the Khao San Road area. You can take a river boat to the Central Pier for about 30p (use the regular service not the "tourist" boat) which then connects onto the Sky Train network but the boats stop running at about 7pm so after then you would have to use a taxi to get around.

Stopping by the riverside is a good idea if you want to be out and about during the day and then have a fairly quiet evening but if you want to be out late enjoying the city centre nightlife (of whichever type floats your boat) until the small hours then you would be better off with a hotel in the Silom or Sukhumvit areas.

Might be worth also looking into Khao Lak, just got back from there this morning, having done time there and also in a tree house in Khao Sok, we did some local tours and also the Surin Islands, staying 11 nights in total.

It was our first (but not our last) time, it's so well set up for traveling around the country. I'd really like to do Koh Lanta next actually......

Very happily married on 10th April 2013 :D
