On a barclays basic account you can have a contactless card but not on a cash card account.

It isn't impossible that Barclays would do this there are already prepaid debit cards (including one that is/was operated by Barclays) that require authorisation for every transaction.

Isn't the cashcard account barclays version of a basic account?

If not then which basic account are you referring to?
You can now also get a visa debit card on the basic cashcard account provided that you pass the credit check for it!!!

I might be wrong but is it defiantly a cash card account you've got as I'm surprised they'd give Contactless cards to kids as my daughter is 16 and has a cash card account.

Like I've said I might be completely wrong and they've decided to just give everyone Contactless cards.

    Thanks for posting this.

I have a Barclays Bank Account that I opened in Oct, but was not issued with a Contactless card when opening it. After asking for one a few times in Nov and Dec, they kept saying it wasn't available for me and I needed to complete an application in branch.

I just phoned and asked for one, and they've sent one out.

Not sure if it'll be an online/offline card, but doesn't really matter to me, as long as it has contactless. :)

They are now issuing online contactless cards for those who aren't eligible for an offline contactless card.

According to their Twitter account they're not. Then again, they didn't even know what an online/offline card is.
  • the basic debit card is offline i think anyway - i have used it abroad on a place and at tesco, morrisons and asda 24 hour petrol pumps rock on barclays actually giving people something good unlike other banks
