Ebay- I state cash on collection but people keep paying by paypal

What should I do? I've recently started selling larger stuff and want to avoid paypal fees where possible, But even though I state clearly cash on collection 3 buyers have now paid via paypal.

Whats the best thing to do? It's irritating but I don't want to alienate buyers by doing the wrong thing

Assuming the amounts are outside your comfort zones then all you can do is refund and ask the buyers politely to pay cash.

They don't have to, and if they choose at that point to walk away there is nothing you can do. You might also come across someone who will report you as a mon performing seller , leave poor feedback and /or low stars, it is a risk you take.

Buyers have the right to pay by PayPal, it will be the default payment if they go through checkout.

  • Thanks. I guess I need to resign myself to it then? Ah well.

Not at all; perhaps you did not read the reply properly.

"...all you can do is refund and ask the buyers politely to pay cash."

If you are irked enough to start a new thread on a forum about it I would have thought you wouldn't mind asking the buyer.

Stick some postage on there at £99.99.
Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...

  • People do that to me all the time.
    So annoying!
If the buyer comes round my house and expects me to wait in for them why should I pay Paypal fees?
Also leaves the seller with no protection as they can open a case and say "item not received".

A few people have actually paid the Paypal fees when I've messaged them and said "cash on collection only".

    Not at all.

It's your item and you are allowed to write 'cash on collection' on your listings.

If a buyer chooses to ignore that, then it stands to reason you wouldn't give them your address and allow them to collect. So they won't get the item. No one would get past my front door if they wanted to use Paypal for collection.

Many buyers will try it on hoping to bully you into posting it for free.

Tell them politely that they can pay cash when they collect, after inspection and that you can't take an electronic payment in advance. If they don't want to cooperate, you don't want to deal with them.

Unfortunately a seller will only get away with that until buyers start leaving negative feed pack, low stars or reporting the seller as a non performing seller. Seller also gets today all those lovely FVfs.

You still have to accept Paypal - it's an eBay requirement that you do for ALL items!

Yep, as I have just posted on another board.

I am concerned that the myth that we can refuse paypal on a collection with no problems is confusing to new sellers and I have no problem with people reminding sellers that cash on collection is definitely preferable, but please can we not pretend that sellers can refuse it and expect the buyer to pay cash. No seller can be forced to sell, but if paypal is refused the buyer can walk away leaving seller with FVFs to pay, possible poor feedback , low stars and a non performing seller complaint

  • Just open another account that you use for cash on collection items.

Use all made up information. When bidder wins, ask for their mobile number. Tell them your real address, bobs your uncle.

That way your protecting your real account fron malicious buyers and scams.
