Not that I agree with the law but kind of makes a joke of the fact all weddings have to be in a public place incase someone wants to object!! It's a silly law and should be gotten rid of especially if the registry offices aren't even upholding it.

Think yourself lucky, they are read in the parish where the bride and groom live and, if they are getting married at a different church, they are read there too.

The church we got married in is 100 miles from the parishes in which we lived. As the two of us couldn't be in three places at once, we had to ask a representative to be present for some of the readings.

I don't think it's archaic. At least you get to know who is getting married, and when. After all, you might want to pop along to the service.
