If you are reasonably fit, look at doing at least one Levada walk, remember it will be always down hill. But its one of those things that an escorted guide is the correct way.It could still be wet and cold to start with , even in the summer, so take advice on what to wear. Buses are good and I for one would not hire a car.
I disagree entirely. The huge majority of Levadas are accessible without need for any sort of guidance. The idea that you should take an escorted guide seems to normally only be pedalled by tour operators on the Tripadvisor forums.
And I reiterate, hiring a car is a breeze. The driving standard and roads are considerably better than you will experience in the UK.0
