Take a look at the Skoda Fabia.
They're a Polo underneath, just about 3 years newer for the money!

Thanks, all. I've been looking on autotrader. For the price, it looks as though a Yaris would be a 2002-2003 rather than 2006-7 for a Fiesta or Polo.
Well your budget isn't huge but you should be able to get a newer Yaris than that for the money. If not then maybe a 4 year newer Fiesta is a better bet. I've heard nothing but bad about VW/Polo.0 -
a year ago I was looking to buy 12 plate fiesta or a polo, ended up choosing a Polo. Generally I found the polo is a much better drive and comes with a spare tyre! After having 3 punctures this has been a lifesaver!
On the other hand, the fiesta was around 2k cheaper and had features such as folding mirrors and heated windscreen but still glad I chose the VW!0
