As suggested I uninstalled, then re-installed.

Although I selected 'firefox' from the CNET site, I ended up downloading 'search/Protect' instead - won't be using that site again! Uninstalled it, then went to Mozilla site and installed Firefox:

    * New window still opens behind the open window
    * and now each new window opened results in a new TaskBar icon - thus filling up the Taskbar.

Previously, there was only one icon irrespective of number of open windows, though hovering over it showed all open windows.

i'm close to abandoning Firefox - any suggestions either for a cure, or for an alternative to Firefox?

    edit: Partial sorted.

    * right-click on taskbar, select 'properties', select 'Taskbar buttons' 'always combine'

new window still opens underneath though....

I gave up on Firefox a year or so ago after issues like yours plus it was s...l...o...w..i...n..g my computer down.

    Try Chrome. Big improvement IMO.
