Anyone know a way round an irritant?

When you select "New Window" (under 'file') in Firefox, the new window opens and then the old window returns on top, hiding the new one.

since one opened the new window for a reason, it is obvious (to me at least!) that it is the new window one wants to work on.

Is there a setting to reverse this default window positioning?

Is there a reason why you're going for a new window and not just a new tab?
Which version of Firefox are you using? (Do not reply with "the latest", we want the full version code e.g. 28.0.a.2)
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

Go to Tools > Options, then in the box that appears go to 'Tabs' and tick 'When I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately'.
I have that ticked so it goes to a new tab when I open one, I just tried it opening a new window and it worked for that too.
As above poster asked, why a new window and not just a new tab?

I don't have that box ticked, and when I click New Window, it still works the way the OP would like (it opens a new window and stays there). So I'm guessing that if it is a setting, it isn't this one.

Just saying, I often use 2 windows in Palemoon/Firefox, because sometimes, I need to see 2 windows at the same time.

eta, just checked and both Firefox and Palemoon open new window on top of existing, regardless of setting on tab options.
    Move along, nothing to see.

I often have more than window ope at same time.

    Version 26.0
Go to Tools > Options, then in the box that appears go to 'Tabs' and tick 'When I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately'.
    This is already ticked.

Might be worth saying this is a new laptop; the last one did not act in this way, but sadly died. New one is running Windows 8.1 as opposed to 7, though I wouldn't have thought that would make a difference.
  • On my Win 8.1 it opens the new window on top using 26.0

Backup your bookmarks (Bookmarks > Show all Bookmarks > Import and Backup > Backup), Then do a complete uninstall of Firefox and then a fresh install? Re-import bookmarks. A clean install may sort it. Maybe.

As suggested I uninstalled, then re-installed.

Although I selected 'firefox' from the CNET site, I ended up downloading 'search/Protect' instead - won't be using that site again! Uninstalled it, then went to Mozilla site and installed Firefox:

    * New window still opens behind the open window
    * and now each new window opened results in a new TaskBar icon - thus filling up the Taskbar.

Previously, there was only one icon irrespective of number of open windows, though hovering over it showed all open windows.

i'm close to abandoning Firefox - any suggestions either for a cure, or for an alternative to Firefox?

    edit: Partial sorted.

    * right-click on taskbar, select 'properties', select 'Taskbar buttons' 'always combine'

new window still opens underneath though....
