Where to buy in London?

We live on Mitcham/Tooting borders so not far from your hood :-) Tooting Broadway tube is 10 mins away, Tooting overground is 3 mins away. I get to Knightsbridge door to door in 45 mins when everything is working.
The 'downside' is that we have a CR4 postcode, the upside is that Tooting is becoming cool (check out yesterday's Sunday Times) and geographically at least we are in Tooting. Our local is a three minute walk and reopened a year ago as a gastro pub complete with boutique cinema - the whole area, rough around the edges when we moved 4 years ago, is rapidly improving.
We bought a 4 bed BTL property, completing November 2013 for £360k Things have gone up but you should be able to get something decent for circa £500k.
Eg. If you like white :-)

If you want a postcode to put into Rightmove use CR4 2DG (our fish and chip shop!).0 -
I would move to SE London (disclosure: I live in SE London). And £500k would net you a decent size 3 bed house in Sydenham or Crofton Park - all nice area. Commute is about 35-40 mins to Euston area.
Watford is pretty decent these days, and with very good connections into Central London and out, it is worth checking out. The not so new anymore Met Line trains are wonderful, and there's also the Overground. The downside is commute is rather expensive, but you offset this with cheaper housing.
Another area to look at is Leytonstone (zone 3). A couple of my friends rent there, and while I have yet to visit them, I've only heard of good stuff from them. It is only 30 mins from Warren Street.0 -
Thanks I've never seen such a white house! There is nothing of colour in there at all (if you don't count the green leaves on the white flowers).
Tooting is another place I hear mixed things about, but buying in an up and coming area would be a bonus as when we do decide to move further out hopefully prices will have increased moreso.0 -

It definitely needs a bit of colour :-)
Tooting today reminds me of Brixton when we moved from there four years ago - seedlings of change. It can only get better and so much cool stuff has opened in the last year or so with lots of developments underway.0 -

What route would you take? I've just typed into citymapper "get me to crofton park" and it reckons the commute is 55 minutes, and my work is pretty close to the tube. Sydenham is also apparently 50 minutes and I'd still have to get from the tube or train station home.
I hadn't even considered leytonstone. I'll have a look at prices there thanks.0 -

Crofton Park is a National Rail station to Blackfriars. We would take the Overground. For Crofton Park, the closest stations are Brockley, Honor Oak Park and Forest Hill.0 -

Thanks. Unfortunately it's about 30 minutes from my work to Blackfriars, and that's on a relatively good day
It seems like a need a new job further South!0 -
That's an alternative route, and I wouldn't even take that! But the good thing about London is just how flexible the transport is.
I occasionally go up to Euston from my fort in Brockley, which takes roughly 30-35 mins from Brockley or Honor Oak Park station.
Another would be taking the train from CP station to St Pancras station and walk 10-15 mins to Euston. But I wouldn't recommend this the line through CP is a very packed and infrequent.
I heard Leytonstone is up and coming (but every where in zone 2-3 London is up and coming these days!).0 -
For 500k you might be able to find something in Southfields.0

Southgate.

Alternatively rethink the commuting cost vs. budget and buy something near Ebbsfleet in Kent (17 mins St Pancras).
