MBNA 'additional payment' Problem

Hello

First time poster longtime lurker in need of a little advise please

I have an MBNA card which I have been making additional payments to as well as the minimum. I was looking to pay a little more when I made the following discovery.

Every time I make an additional payment, they reduce the amount taken for the minium payment.

For example:
If my min charge is £100 and I pay £50, then come month end they only take £50 meaning I only ever pay the minium.
How do I over pay?

If I paid £110 would they take nothing as the min payment?

Im so confused and disappointed as I thought I had been doing so well with over payments only to find I have overpaid nothing :(

Many thanks in advance

Make your overpayment after they take the minimum and before your next statement date.

Thanks, any idea how I find out when this window is?
  • I think all card providers do this. Just pay exactly what you would like to pay, if this is over the minimum then they wont take any DD out. Check with MBNA and they'll explain it to you.

Your statement is produced on (roughly) the same date each month. Your DD is taken on (roughly) the same date each month.

So when you see the DD leave your account, make your additional payment then.

    Easy?

Have to say though, that I'm surprised they operate like this for you because all my MBNA paperwork, and the FAQ on their website, says that no matter how much extra you pay after your statement is produced, they'll still take whatever the statement minimum payment DD states.

I am further surprised by this...

...as this would imply you're not checking either your bank statements or credit card statements for an extended period. That's poor management on your part, but I'm sure you'll be making changes in that area from now on? :)

No excuse. Check your emails and log on to your online area (at least once per month)!
