Stopping a cat from enterring the house... water pistol?

Okay, this is cruel, I know, but despite having two cats that are more than capable of looking after themselves, we've had a cat coming in through the cat flap lately who eats their food, but also seems like he is possibly spraying inside the house (on 3 occasions there have been yellow stains on the skirting - though luckily only a tiny amount) and it seems like it isn't going to stop without our intervention.

I know a magnetic cat flap is probably the best solution, but I hate the idea of our cats wearing collars (they spent 6 months in an animal shelter before we re-homed them, and are generally quite nervy) so it seems the only other solution is to get a water pistol and wait all night for the cat to come through into the utility room before blasting it.

So, with that in mind, what is the best water pistol to get? I want something with seriously good range, preferably something I can sit in the office upstairs and snipe out of the window into the garden if necessary.

The only one I can find with a decent range is the Water Blaster XLR that throws out so much water it'd either completely flood the utility room, or drown the cat, so I'm after something that still has a good range, but isn't too excessive :D

Thanks

  • We have a catflap that scans our cats' microchips so there is no need for collars. Maybe worth thinking about?

I had the same problem, but visiting cat also sprayed in my house. A microchip reading cat flap solved the problem beautifully! Best 60 quid I've ever spent.

Thanks! I didn't know you could get ones that would scan the microchip... that would be perfect! (I guess they're reliable?)

You can get similar ones that read a chip on their collar too :)

We haven't had any issues other than rain getting into ours but it is very exposed. We've just bought a new one to replace the old.

It solved the problem of other cats getting in and spraying.

We've had the Sureflap for about 18 months and it's been fine. We had one small issue but that was solved by a call to the company who sent out a spare part (FOC) very quickly, excellent customer service.

We had the very same issue. I set the catflap one night to allow cats in, but not out. Middle of the night there was one heck of a commotion and the offending cat was stuck at the catflap unable to get out.

One soaking and a light tap with a bamboo cane before letting him out and the problem never came back again. No need for expensive catflaps.

sureflap works with the microchip so there is no need for a collar...they are quite expensive ours was arond £100 but in honesty its really worth the money.

It stopped the exact same problem we had as you.

    Hi
Another vote for a catflap that reads the chip in your cat. We've got a sureflap and its great.
Its also very amusing watching potential invaders banging their noses because the flap won't let them in !
    We got ours from zooplus.

I wouldn't recommend a magnetic cat flap - I have one and we have a cat burglar who has found a weak spot on it and can open it without much force.

I intend to invest in a microchip one eventually.
