GAME trade-in...price-matching with CEX

Don't know if this has been mentioned before but my local GAME store is currently price-matching with CEX on trade-ins.

My son got an unbelievably good deal when swapping his XBox 360 and games for a PS3 and games yesterday, so much so that we have just been checking the receipt in case there were any errors.

The GAME trade-in price for the console was £60 but as they matched the CEX price, we got £97!

If you're thinking of trading anything, it may be worth a look. ;)

Not sure if its been mentioned on here as I've never seen it but yes its been going for a few years, you used to take in proof of the trade in price at cex so wonder if this has changed.
  • Did they price match on the cash value or the voucher value, and was it for cash or credit?

They price match either cash or credit and beat the total by £1. Game also have loyalty card too so you get points on everything you trade in as well as everything you buy, so it always works out better to go there than cex.

We got credit as DS swapped his XBox for a PS3. I was surprised as he has traded in stuff before and I have never noticed this. I was also surprised that the prices were so good, I thought CEX were notorious for buying low and selling high!

The +£1 makes sense too, we've just found the XBox price on CEX at exactly £1 lower than they gave us for it.

For trading in a newish, boxed XBox and games, he got a brand-new red PS3 (with two controllers) and 6 games. I don't feel so bad now, he'd already traded in his original PS3 in order to get the XBox. I thought that he would end up with a second-hand console and a couple of games so I think that he got a really good deal in the end.

  • My friend put me on to this years ago when she was a manager at GameStation.

Go on to CEX website put all your items in and they matched the trade in + £1.

Traded my PS2 in for a used 360 (when GTA4 was released) and walked out with the 360, Burnout Revenge, GTA 4 and the full set up for the 1st RockBand.

Unoffical student discount may also have helped :rotfl: but its been going on for years, but only use to be if there was a CEX within 5 miles.

*We'll beat any offer by £1 only applicable to in store trade-in credit, cash excluded.

Store has be within a mile of the other and is down to managers discretion...but it has been around for years OP. Traded in a game they were giving £4 credit for...in the end got £9 as CEX was £8 trade.

It surprised me as there is no CEX store anywhere our local Game shop.

Funnily enough, our nearest CEX is a new store which is located in what used to be a Game store!

I'm guessing that we just got lucky, we couldn't work out how we got such a good deal, I thought that maybe Game were clearing out as much stock as possible, bearing in mind all of the rumours of the company struggling and maybe going into administration and so on, a couple of years ago.

I must admit, we've always got good deals there and the staff are extremely helpful and pleasant to deal with. And it's much better than the aggro of selling on ebay and the like!

Thanks for posting this. I always think CEX have the market cornered. Game have obvs theirs money to be made in resale
  • I do this a lot at my local Game (which has a CEX on the same street).

Not sure on the official policy but in our Game they do not ask for proof of the trade-in price at CEX, they look it up themselves. Never been questioned or refused, even for multiple copies of the same game. As mentioned above, it's for credit only but there is a big advantage now in that Game gift cards (that the credit goes onto) can be used at their online shop. Often their online prices are significantly cheaper. Got a Wii U and free game for £139.99 a couple of weeks ago and it's like new.

I've found that the GAME trade in price match policy has been restricted so much recently that it is virtually useless. I was told a couple of weeks ago that they would beat trade in prices of all stores that predominantly sell video games within a one mile radius. That excluded HMV because that is an 'entertainment store'. It also excludes supermarkets and such. In fact, it only includes CEX and Grainger Games according to the employee that I spoke to. One mile is a pitifully small catchment area, so as far as I'm concerned the policy is useful for those who have a CEX or Grainger down the road from their local GAME store, but it is useless for everyone else. Honestly I was quite disappointed that they wouldn't even price match HMV, which is a surprising decision to say the least.
