Yes it definatley was skimmed when it was in for repair I rang them on the 3rd day and they told me the head was being skimmed that day. Would they have noticed if the block was cracked?0
-
Many many years ago I did the head/gasket on my father's car and it turned out to be a cracked block. The way we knew was a misfire on one cylinder and water on the plug.0
-
So if the head gasket was replaced for a 2nd time it would just go again?
Would they of noticed this when replacing it?
How does a block get cracked might this of happened when the head gasket blew first time?
Could there be a chance it isn't the head gasket is there anything else that would make the oil foamy?0 -
If the original head gasket failed through overheating then the overheating may cause the block to crack. It's often very difficult to see the crack visually though.
If they flushed the engine oil to get rid of all the foamy mayo type stuff (water mixing with oil), then topped it back up and the mayo substance has returned and the coolant is still dropping then it still appears the original problem is still there.
Take it back to the garage, tell them what's happening and ask them to fix the problem.
Blocked breathers also make the oil get gunked up but i don't think this is the cause as you are losing coolant and you have just had the head gasket replacedAll your base are belong to us.0 -
Do you think this will be covered by the head gasket warranty or will I have to pay again?0
-
The bottom line is you went in with a fault for your car. You paid them to diagnose the fault and repair it. Warranty aside, they seem to have charged you for the above but haven't fixed the fault correctly.
Even without the warranty you shouldn't have to pay anymore at this stage. All your base are belong to us.0 -
it can take more than 2 flushed to get rid of the "mayo" after a HG failure, its common to have some moyo left over after a HG change even when flushed twice.
yes the expansion cap seal can cause mayo in the expansion tank also.
if the water and oil is not on the floor in the mornings or when parked up for a period of time then you have to ask where is it going.
ask your garage to do a sniff test, or a UV water leak out test to find where your water is leaking.0 -
Thank you for the replies.
I will go back to the garage again tomorrow, they are aware of the coolant loss etc because I have been back twice since the head gasket was replaced, I have always trusted this garage but sadly I think that if you are female they still think they can fob you off with any old tosh, but I am really p****d off now.0 -
A cracked block would give similar symptons of a headgasket failure.
And a test the garage would probably not have done unless you asked them to. Involves dyes and a powder to trace. But it may only open up when at a certain temperature which they wont be able to reproduce with the engine in the car.
Filling a hot engine with cold water can cause cracks. If its the block then i would expect the garage to charge again. The bottom part of the engine will need to be replaced. Or specialists can weld them up. And machine the bores again. Costly though.
They need to explain where the water is going.
All depends what was said by who on the initial contact. Did you contact them and say the head gasket had gone?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Initially I took the car to them due to overheating and they said the head gasket had blown they replaced it and then the thermostat wasn't working so I took it back and they replaced that. I told them it was still losing coolant and was told it was due to the new head gasket and it would settle. Last week it started losing more coolant which I kept refilling and today I noticed the foam in oil and small amount in the radiator.
They told me after replacing the head gasket and it is on the receipt work gaurenteed for 12 months, but if this is a different problem I suppose that doesn't stand.
However, I think if your are doing an expensive job like a head gasket you should diagnose why it blew in the first place. I did ask them about the test initially but I think it was said there was no doubt it was the head gasket or the test would not be conclusive but it was mentioned just cannot remember the reply,0
