Weird or nice behaviour?

If you were buying a flat (in 5 days) would you find it creepy if the seller left a note through your current door offering to leave behind a fridge and a freezer? Or would you appreciate the offer?

I'm the seller in this case, the buyer lives just around the corner. I know that she is in a rented flat at the moment so probably doesn't have these things. I also know that she is removing a wall to move the kitchen in 'my' flat, so will be buying all new kitchen stuff.

When we were concluding missives we specified that both the washing machine and cooker would stay and I made it clear that neither is in tip top condition, but at the time I didn't know I was moving to somewhere with a built in fridge & freezer.

So, would you find it weird if someone you were buying from dropped a note through your door? Or should I just leave them behind.

  • Drop the note and ASK them if they want your second-hand goods gratis. If you just leave them behind without asking first and the buyer doesn't want them you are just dumping crap on them which it will cost them to have removed and disposed of.

I wouldn't think it weird at all - it might be doing her a favour, and if she doesn't want them she can easily say "no thank you". She may find them useful even as a temporary measure. Make it clear whether you are leaving them as a freebie or not.
  • I don't think it's odd at all, just explain you've now discovered your new place has a F/F, describe the condition and give them the option, rather than just leave them. They might send you a bill for disposing of them if you don't.

I would think it would be very kind of you to be so considerate to be honest.

    Not weird at all.

Not weird as long as you ask. Obviously you don't want to just leave it there because you can't be bothered to get rid of it yourself.
  • I think it's very nice of you to ask. If she doesn't want them then sell them on a local selling group on Facebook or in local paper

Fridges and freezers are expensive to dispose of, and can be a criminal offence with heavy fines if they are not disposed of correctly.

I suggest you clear this up in person with the buyer in person. If they have already bought a fridge and freezer then they would be quite rightly peeved if you leave them behind for them to pick up the cost of disposing them and they probably will have a claim against you.

If they don't already have them, then I'm sure they would be happy to have them!!

Of course it's not creepy - although if it was a woman living alone I'd probably do it through the estate agent if I was a single male .

sometimes people just leave stuff behind without asking-I'd asked for the cooker to be included in my last purchase .....when we moved I found they had also left the (working) washing machine-still plumbed in. As it happened I had left mine behind as it was integrated and had planned on buying one so it did me a turn (for the next three years). Had I brought mine it would have been a pain though-it was just luck it worked out.

I agree with mummyroy - if she doesn't want it -sell it or freecycle it.
However with the growing trend of recycling scrap metal certainly in my area if you put a washing machine or fridge out on the street around here within an hour you'll get a knock from someone asking if they can take it :)

There seems to a consensus (rare around here!) that I should drop her a note, so I will.

    Cheers!

If she doesn't want them I'll freecycle them. Now, I just have to get the heating timer fixed by friday!
